Johnny Depp in talks to star as Houdini in The Secret Life of Houdini

05.27.2014

Johnny Depp might have to be fitted for a straitjacket soon. The actor is in talks to take on the title role in the long-awaited adaptation of authors William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero". Said to be in the vein of Indiana Jones, the story follows the famous magician while he is investigating the world of the occult. Dean Parisot (GALAXY QUEST, RED 2) will helm the project which is set to begin production in November 2014.

Here is the books synopsis:

The Secret Life of Houdini traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame—his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

I was in the sixth grade when I picked up a Houdini biography and I have been fascinated ever since. This project is exciting and Depp would be a great for this role which seems to give itself a little more excitement for today's audience, something that was done with SHERLOCK HOLMES as well.

It's been said before, but Depp needs a hit bad; DARK SHADOWS, THE LONE RANGER, and TRANSCENDENCE left a bad taste with audiences and we're all waiting for his return to form. That could come soon as he's set to return to Wonderland in THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS which he will shoot next and then it's either the Houdini pic or PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5.

Do you want to see Depp as Houdini or Captain Jack Sparrow again?

The suspended straitjacket escape was one of his most famous stunts:

I think I would just rather watch the 1953 'Houdini' starring Tony Curtis... that's a good movie (minus the factual errors)... and Tony Curtis did most of his own magic.

Honestly I'll watch anything he's in that he had fun doing. why's that matter? Well look at Bruce Willis' "I really dont want to be here" movies

He looks a good bit like the man, which is more than I could say for his John Dillinger (or presumably, his Whitey Bulger). Not to mention a guy like Houdini would be well within Depp's wheelhouse.

I think Johnny Depp should attempt more biopics, Ed Wood was one of his best performances and hopefully he makes a good Whitey Bolger. It's not a very well-known film and it's not even a great one but if you're interested in Houdini and the mystery surrounding his death, I'd recommend Death-Defying Acts. It stars Guy Pearce as Houdini, with Catherine Zeta-Jones as a seductive con-artist and Saoirse Ronan as her daughter. The alternate history angle is hokey, but it is romantic, beautifully

Ed Wood was great. It was a few biopic movies that I really like, aside from The Aviator and Casino (if that counts as biopic).

He would probably do a great job with the role, but I always pictured someone more like Adrien Brody for the role of Houdini. I think he would be an excellent choice.

I would not want Depp doing this role. I feel he's in a slump (not just box office) but he hasn't truly done anything that has excited me or made me forget that I was watching Johnny Depp onscreen. And that's my fear for this film, is that his star power would overshadow the actual Houdini. Get someone a little lesser known who will fully commit.

This seems like a very natural fit for him but I am seriously growing weary of Depp picking these safe roles. He's like the go to actor for an eccentric or quirky character. I want him to try something new. Maybe along the lines of True Detective. I would die to see him make the switch to ass kicking tv.
