Johnny Depp not being sought for Doctor Strange, Kevin Feige says

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Last month brought us the rumor that Marvel was interested in having Johnny Depp star in their DOCTOR STRANGE film. Well, the “official” word was that they had a meeting with the actor, who would certainly be an intriguing choice for the role. But today that talk is being denied by none other than Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige.

In an interview with IGN, Feige admits that they’re meeting with several people for DOCTOR STRANGE, but apparently Depp is not one of them. When asked if Marvel has reached out to Depp, Feige responded:

No, no. When you have a project that’s been around as long as Doctor Strange, there is sometimes, “Oh, I’ve met with Stan about this! Or I did that!” So Strange is one of those projects that predates me by a long shot. Obviously, the character does, but even in its cinematic brewing. So there’s a lot of things that have happened before me, and I’ve been here 14 years. So that’s a long time ago. I don’t know if that happened then.

Of course, Feige could be pulling the wool over our eyes, but at the moment we’ll take his word for it.

Feige also denied the list of directors that had cropped up in a Hollywood Reporter article recently.

Well, that article [from The Hollywood Reporter] was true that we’re meeting a lot of people now. That article was not true about who we’re meeting or what level anybody is. But we’re actively looking.

That list of directors was a strange one (no pun intended), as it included relative unknowns like Dean Israelite (helmer of WELCOME TO YESTERDAY) and Nikolaj Arcel (A ROYAL AFFAIR), but as Marvel is always thinking outside the box, there was no real reason to think it was inaccurate. Now there is.

So the question is, who do you think would made an ideal actor/director combo for DOCTOR STRANGE?
