Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton candidates for Rick Flag in Suicide Squad

01.22.2015

With Tom Hardy out and Jake Gyllenhaal passing, the role of Rick Flag in SUICIDE SQUAD is still in flux. But, two new names have entered the fray as reports have THE WALKING DEAD's Jon Bernthal and EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS star Joel Edgerton as potential actors that Warner Bros is interested in talking to about the part.

A source from the studio revealed this information to Cinema Blend while also citing that Gary Sinise may be a contender for an undisclosed role in David Ayer's film, a rumor first posed by Latino Review. Again, these are just rumors but they would seem to make sense.

While Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal would have been great to see in SUICIDE SQUAD, sources are claiming that the Rick Flag role is a minor one. With Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto on the docket, I would imagine casting someone with a little less star power but nonetheless a great screen presence would be vital. Bernthal worked with Ayer on FURY so he seems like a natural candidate. Edgerton has been in several high profile films recently including THE GREAT GATSBY and ZERO DARK THIRTY and would also be a good choice.

Filming is expected to get underway soon on SUICIDE SQUAD so I would think we will be hearing about the casting of the new Rick Flag sooner than later. SUICIDE SQUAD is slated to open on August 5, 2016.

I would much prefer Edgerton over Bernthal. I'm still not convinced that Bernthal can do a character without a deep southern accent.

I can't see anyone but Bernthal now that I think about it.

Now this makes more sense. Joel Edgerton is still unknown enough to not steal attention. Bernthal is an old hand at ensemble roles by now. I'm not taking bets on which one will get it, but Bernthal being the slightly less-famous of the two might put the odds in his favor if Edgerton doesn't think it fits in his schedule.

Jon Bernthal for the win. Not only can he really act (his character arc on The Walking Dead is still the best IMO), but he holds his presence amongst the bigger names very well. And they can probably get him cheap! I cant imagine how much money is going to salary the current cast....

Haha, good point. Will Smith is a horrible choice for the role.

Plus, Bernthal probably has the edge due to his previous working experience with Ayer because of Fury.

Jon Bernthal

Jon Bernthal for sure. The guy has more than proved that he can hold his own. Especially in a cast and film caliber of this size.

Bernthal

If it's a smaller part, then the difficulty in casting it is probably a combination of trying to get an actor to commit to a month of filming plus months of promotion as well as hiring them on the cheap. Bernthal makes the most sense as he still needs exposure, this is a big film with no "fans" in the real world, so it gives him a chance to be a memorable part of a new property. Edgerton has just done so much and lately I haven't been a big fan of his projects outside of Felony.

Tough Competition

I have to go with Joel though, but I would be very happy if it's either one. After Hardy left and Gyllenhaal was being approached I was kind of surprised Edgerton had not been considered. So I am very happy with this news.

I like Edgerton a lot and all, but man, I want to see Bernthal as Flag. I think he would be great for the role. But at the end of the day I would be happy with either.

No offense, but fuck Edgerton, give it to Bernthal. He's the better actor.

Love both these guys

but Joel Edgerton definitely has the edge for me by a bit of a fair margin.
