Mad Max vs. Rambo! Mel Gibson will appear in The Expendables 3 as the villain

06.07.2013

Mel Gibson

I really wanted to see Mel Gibson direct THE EXPENDABLES 3, as did Sylvester Stallone at one point. Patrick Hughes is helming that flick but it appears that Gibson is going to be a part of the ensemble action film. A source for Showbiz 411 has told them that the actor will star in THE EXPENDABLES 3 as the villain. While there hasn't been any confirmation that Mel Gibson will be in the film it wouldn't be a surprise considering they wanted him for the directing gig.

It's been a rough few years for Mel Gibson. I'm not going to defend or criticize the guy's personal life but looking at just his most recent years in film, it's too bad he hasn't directed a movie since 2006 APOCALYPTO (underrated in my opinion) and THE BEAVER didn't give his career the boost I'm sure he thought it would. While I enjoyed GET THE GRINGO a lot it kind of sucks that it didn't have a theatrical release so not that many people are aware of it or they just assume that the movie is terrible.

But this news combined with his other villain part in MACHETE KILLS to me is the first time I've seen Mel Gibson have fun in films in a long time. And if he's staying busy maybe he won't have time to do some of the things that got him in trouble in the first place.

Also starring Jason Statham, Jackie Chan, Mickey Rourke, Milla Jovovich, Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes and I'm sure plenty more, THE EXPENDABLES 3 will be in theaters August 15th, 2014.

My idea for a comeback film for Mel

I think this could be a fun movie with this lineup of actors. I just hope the dialogue (I know isn't supposed to be praise worthy) is sharper and wittier than it was in part 2. That one was just real cringe worthy.
I do think a good comeback movie for Mel would be (some may disagree) a reboot/sequel to Lethal Weapon. I know I know. Just hear me out. Part 5 would have Danny Glover, (Murtaugh) now the Captain of the police force. Mel (Riggs) would be playing basically the part Danny played in

Part 5 would have Danny Glover, (Murtaugh) now the Captain of the police force. Mel (Riggs) would be playing basically the part Danny played in the previous ones, (Old man, waiting out his days for retirement) But now HE's teamed with a young hothead not unlike what Riggs was.(Murtaugh's idea of paying him back for causing him so much grief) I'm picturing someone like Tom Hardy. Story wise, I was thinking something in the lines of Rigg's now teenage son getting caught up in some gang violence or some kind of conflict that requires Mel, Hardy, and maybe a bit of Danny to step in. All while Riggs tries to guide a young partner from the recklessness that about killed him more than a few times.....I don't know. Could be something there. The idea of seeing Mel and Danny together again, plus Hardy?! I'd see it.

I still say...

Al Leong should make an appearance...he's the definition of "80's henchman".

could be the greatest movie ever?

Van damme was a great villain and physically intimidating. So I hope Mel will be psychologically intimidating

I have no problem separating the art from the artist, so with that said I think Gibson should still be an A-list leading actor, his resume deserves it.

WOW, 2 movies & somewhat B movies that Mel will be playing a villain, should be interesting to see how he plays each role. I seen the trailer for Machete Kills & looks like a blast & Mel is having fun in the role. As long as he is getting roles again. Could care less about his personal vendettas, much like Cruise, both are top actors in their own right who get bad wraps for their own mistakes.

Nice

The first two movies were OK to me, but Expendables 3 now looks good.

Extra Tidbit: Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, and Keanu Reeves.

I can never see the name Michael Jai White and not think of Jaleel White. Urkel in Expendables would be interesting to say the least.

Make fun of me all you want, but I'm more excited for Expendables 3, than I am for Star Wars 7.

It would be awesome if it were true

While I wasn't impressed with the way Mel Gibson melted down over the past several years, the guy is still a sickeningly talented director and actor. I'd love to see this become a Robert Downey Jr.-style comeback for him.

Is Showbiz411 legit ? It sounds and looks like a gossip website.

The Rock, nice! Kurt Russell, hell yeah! The rest, no fucking way bro, no one should be in this movie unless they were able to headline a theatrical release at one point in their career. Blanks, no, Dudikoff, hell no, Rothrock, who?

its nice to see all green comments on here, i know Mel has had it hard the last few years, but in all honesty, the man has talent when it comes to films. Im interested to see how this will turn out, especially with all the other cast announced, i mean...Jackie Chan! this should be fun.

I'm actually interested in this now. Between Gibson and Nic Cage there is a lot of potential for this to be a more eccentric movie. And Mickey Rourke is returning?

No fucking way

This is awesome news. I really wish Mel Gibson was also the director (he is amazing director) but its great that he will play the villain. He should play the boss and the other villains should be Wesley Snipes,Nicola Cage and Milla Jovovich. Steven Seagal should have a small cameo (weapons dealer) and that would be awesome. Also i wished Kurt Russell had a small cameo here.

Man I love Mel Gibson. If he's the bad guy that's amazing and I hope Mel, Cage and Snipes form some kind of rival expendables.

I loved him in the Beaver and hope he does a good job here. Mel did some bad shit, but his movies are usually pretty great.

Gibson is a Hollywood legend and is one of the greatest most iconic actors of all time (Lethal Weapon, Mad Max, Patriot, Braveheart, etc) and really deserve a comeback. I know his personal life has kind of screwed things up for him for the last couple of years, but I would love to see the guy make a comeback in some big high profile films.

Anyway him being the villain in this should be amazing to watch. This is already sounding like the best Expendables yet.

Agreed. Part II was skirting a little too far into the cornball area for my taste. Hopefully they can keep it all in check and really make it the best yet.

sorry bud, best expendables yet? Based on one casting choice? COME ON MANNNNNNN! This isn't Tom Hanks or Tommy WIseau joining the cast.

Eric Roberts was great in the first one, JCVD set the bar high in the sequel (Entertainment wise, and was actually physically threatening), will Mel top that? Possibly but knowing nothing about the plot nor the type of character Mel is going to be (could end up being my horrible version below) ya can't really say that.

Actually Mel was once as big, if not bigger, a star as Tom Hanks...and hopefully your joking about a guy whos done 5 movies, just adding Mel alone should make this the best yet, unless, like longbaugh said about part 2, this goes even cornier

Awesome-o

Please let him be just an over the top caricature of himself. Maybe have his evil plot being him trying to kill all the jews in the world with some kind of "jew cannon". Call him Adolf Hussain while we're at it.

Regardless of his personal issues, I love Mel Gibson on screen. I try to sell Get The Gringo to anyone I can. Pitching it as the spiritual sequel to Payback usually works. Personally, I think these types of roles are great to see him in. I can't wait!

This is going to be nuts, in a good way. Hopefully it's better than Seagal's turn as the villain in Machete (come to think of it, that was still kinda fun).
