Marvel may be making another Blade movie after all... about his daughter

08.25.2015

Remember not too long ago when Wesley Snipes was spilling the beans about meeting with Marvel Studios, and the topic of their conversations seemed to be the actor stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in order to reprise his role as Blade?

Well, it seems as if Snipes may have really been onto something if the rumors of his participation in the MCU turn out to be true. Only they don't seem to be supporting the idea that Snipes himself will be fronting a new chapter in Blade's adventures, but filling more of a supporting role with Marvel instead exploring designs on a solo film about his daughter.

New rumblings suggest that the studio is eyeing a movie built around his kin, 16-year-old Fallon Grey, who was announced to be receiving her own Marvel Comics series earlier this year. The #1 issue of that book has been pushed back from its initial release and the suggestion is that the delay is due to Marvel's increased level of care with the property for future use. The character would be extremely important for what Marvel is looking to do in the future, and, as a result, they'd like to make sure there are no screw-ups in launching Grey with long-term benefits now in mind.

Snipes would still factor in, as he is said to have an important role in the comics. That would allow him to step into new territory that the previous trilogy of films didn't exactly cover, allowing Marvel a taste of something old and something new at the same time.

If this comes to fruition, it sounds like a brilliant idea for bringing Blade back into the fold while passing the torch to someone else to carry the franchise forward.

To Blade or not to Blade...? That is the question. How do you feel about the idea of Blade passing the torch to his daughter to continue the series?

Historically, a bad idea

If you look back on films that have done this exact thing (Taking a fan-loved main character, and inserting their child into the sequel), you will find your answer of how bad this idea is. For reference: A Good Day to Die Hard, Superman Returns, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Legend of Zorro. All critically panned. However, I actually liked Superman Returns, up until the point they introduced his son. Basically, introducing the children of the main protagonist into

The one and only exception to this, that I can think of, is Terminator 2. But, I seriously doubt they will bring in James Cameron to direct this...

Except that John McClane is not a superhero and never was. What would be the point of hiring Wesley Snipes to come back as Blade and then having a stunt guy actually be Blade? They might as well recast Blade with the stunt guy in the role.

Why does Hollywood keep making movies that no one wants?!?! It's like someone was in a meeting and was like, "hey, everyone think of all the dumbest possible ideas you can come up with. I mean you can't possibly pitch me a dumb enough idea. We don't care if the audiences actually want to see it or not, just throw out some dumb ideas. Then some guy said let's make a Blade movie about his daughter. Brilliant! That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard! You are a winner!"

This is a bad idea for a few reasons. For starters, look at Terminator Genisys... if you throw people a curve ball on something thats already great, you're going to loose that loyal target audience. If you show Blade rescuing his daughter a long time ago and she's more or less working like Whistler now, maybe. But don't make his daughter a second rate Hit Girl.

Blade 4: Generations

Come on, guys, this is good news: it confirmed what Wesley Snipes said about Marvel wanting him to play Blade. Obviously Wesley Snipes wanted his own movie and they told him that they could give him a "supporting role" in an upcoming movie and he is obviously down with that. So now they've found a way to both bring back Wesley Snipes as Blade and make it a supporting role. The important thing is that Marvel is developing a Blade movie. That series probably won't drop until 2018 with Iron Fist coming out in 2017.

Man, you internet fans are a fickle bunch.

"Why isn't Marvel making more female centric super hero franchises?"

"Hey Guys, it's Marvel. Just wanted to let you know we heard you, and so here's a female centric super hero franchise we're developing."

"No! We don't want THAT super hero franchise to be female centric! We want that franchise to have the original male character! Do a different female centric super hero franchise!"

I swear, i picture you all in your rooms having 2 sided arguments with yourselves like Gollum in Lord of

1. Helps if its actually a previously well known female hero. Never have heard of Blade having a daughter before today
2. Helps if the character isn't ripping the mantel from a fan favorite

Completely agree with you CMonty. I don't think Fanboys actually know what they want. For starters, Blade hasn't even had his own title for years and has barely shown up in Marvel Comics in the past decade. So I question how many "die-hard" fans f the character are out there. Obviously not enough to keep book sales up and the title on the shelves.

So with that said, what's the harm in Marvel switching up the character. The original character was not pulling in sales, but now they've

So with that said, what's the harm in Marvel switching up the character. The original character was not pulling in sales, but now they've found a way to 1) bring that character back and 2) introduce a new female hero. Since they're planning to heavily market this new character in the comics, who knows what the end game might be. She might turn out to be an awesome character worth making into a movie. Fact is, none of the fanboys know anything right now to say this is a bad idea.

Blade was never a fan favorite. Wesley Snipes as Blade was a fan favorite. Blade comics have never done well. The Spike TV show was not a hit. The Punisher, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, they were all popular characters in the comics before they became popular enough to warrant movies and sequels. A Blade movie without Wesley Snipes would flop. Marvel knows this. But they also know that Wesley Snipes is too old to continue playing Blade. This is a

@martinphipps I do not think Wesley Snipes is too old to play Blade. He is 53 and still in better shape than guys half his age. Plus there are not many black actors that have martial arts training as well as weapons training as he does, hence the need for Marvel to keep him around. If Downey Jr. can play Iron Man at 50 or Arnold still playing a terminator at 68 I think Snipes has a good ten years of playing him, that is at least another trilogy.

I want BLADE, not his daughter....

They will fuck it up. They will make the daughter some horrible teenager that nobody will be able to stand on screen. The best moments will be Blade kicking ass anyways and the reviews will be like "it was crap, but Snipes was awesome!" or "Why didn't they just make this a Blade movie instead of forcing him the pass the torch".

As great as Marvel's comics can be, they can also have some seriously stupid spin-offs.
But the problem is, a comic book spin-off rarely hurts the original, while a movie spin-off/reboot like this erases the chance to have another 'normal' Blade movie. Pass!

Ok. Although it'd be cool to see Wesley play Blade again and we all know he needs this more than Marvel needs him I'm just lost and confused about one thing... Marvel has recast every actor for every character they have regained the rights to. What makes Snipes and Blade any different? Now, I'm not being sarcastic. Its a genuine question and if someone knows or has a valid opinion I'd like a genuine answer.

Not sure, I'd like to know as well.

He was such a pain on the set of 3, I wonder why they wouldn't recast?

I put Snipes in the same field as Jackman, they own those roles. Snipes is Blade. This may be a way to send him off, they may kill him off in the new movie?

Who knows? Anyone?

So instead of getting ass kicking vampire killing Blade we get Saved By The Bell the vampire years? YAY!!!! #smh. Seriously this is nothing more than Marvel trying to kill two birds with one stone. This one checks the underrepresented female and minority boxes. So instead of giving us what we want, they are going to turn Blade into a nanny. We want our established hero to actually be a hero, not a nanny to someone that doesn't even have a comic series yet that we've never heard of. I've loved

How about reboot Blade first and then look at this down the line.

This just sounds like Marvel trying to hit every demographic in every form.

Somehow Blade telling his daughter " Looks like your mascara's running" does not have the same effect. But as long as Blade is still kicking ass and Snipes is involved I would be cool with it, yet it looks as if Marvel is trying to capitalize on Michonne's popularity from the Walking Dead just replace zombies with vampires.
