Max Landis isn't writing Ghostbusters 3 script but he has some good ideas

06.19.2014

Earlier this week you may have seen the rumor about CHRONICLE's scribe Max Landis being hired to develop a new draft of the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Landis quickly denied the rumor on his Twitter, however he later tweeted a few interesting ideas for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, including a pre-credit opening for the film. Just to reiterate, Max Landis is not writing the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, and these are only ideas for it, not actual plans for the movie.

Haha a bunch of people asking what my Ghostbusters 3 pitch would've been. I never had a full one, just a skeleton I've goofed around with...My Ghostbusters 3 began in the 1920s with Ivo Shandor murdering a gluttonous associate to protect his cult after he has a moral objection...Shandor tells the overweight man that nothing can stop the coming of Gozer; first, the gate will open in 1984, then again twenty years later...The fat man, who now has all the details of Shandor's plans, threatens to go to the police, and Shandor poisons him. It's scary, but...As Shandor escapes, we see that we're in the Sedgewick Hotel, and that the guy we just saw die...Is Slimer. Cue theme. Show title.

My full movie concerns several new teams (focusing on one), grown from the Ghostbusters Franchise which is now global (and going bankrupt)... Ghostbusters have become a parody of themselves, there are barely twelve ghosts caught a year. People have forgotten what happened in NYC...Egon passed away, Venkman lives on an island, Winston retired rich. Only Ray Stantz is left in charge, and he's a terrible business man.

In an effort to bring back business, an obsessed team whose station has been shut down attempts to summon a minor ghost. Mistake. Gozer...It's up to our hero team to stop the bad team, reunite the fractured franchises, and save our dimension from a very pissed off demigod...It's all very meta (creatively bankrupt Ghostbusters, no one wants the new team, the bad team are slick Michael Bay-versions of the GBs)......But you keep the action, comedy, and emotion sincere. Witty, bluecollar guys who are the last people you'd want saving the world...And I think the teams would be by modern-comedy clique; a Parks/Rec team, a Rogen/Franco team, a Kroll/Key/Peele team...I don't know. I've thought a lot about Ghostbusters 3. But I'm kind of close on the Akroyd/Ramis side of things so it always felt weird.

I don't know about the rest of you, but Max Landis' ideas GHOSTBUSTERS 3 sound pretty damn cool to me, and I think they could work as well. It wouldn't be a straight-up sequel, however it would have just enough elements from the first two movies not to be a complete reboot either. Last we knew, Etan Cohen, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were working on the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, and Sony is still looking for a director. If I was Sony, I'd definitely see if Max Landis has any actual interest in contributing to the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

What do you think of Max Landis' ideas for GHOSTBUSTERS 3?

It's actually quite an interesting concept having ordinary, blue collared people picking up the proton packs just like how Rick Moranis' character did it in Ghostbusters 2. But I'd have Egon died a Steve Jobs death, Aykroyd stepped aside and become a university professor (a role usually more suited for Egon, but I see Ray as more like the Wozniak type), Venkman retired as a reclusive millionaire, Winston is just happy enough to have been a part of it. Ghostbusters got all styled up and become a huge corporate business run by conglomerates, leaving behind the heroic legacy for profit by creating fluff tech products like mobile smartphones with ectoplasmic scanning app and cameras, and yes even sell pokemon-like ghost pets for kids. But then a lowly accountant and his similarly oddball group of friends finds out that the ghosts were artificially created from cultivated ectoplasm to keep the big business going, and things start to go awry when Ghostbusters. Inc. unearthed something far more dangerous than Gozer when tampering with ghost energy. So finally it's up to these guys to save the day and bring back the glory days of Ghostbusters.
Oh, I also love the idea of having it starred by Key and Peele.

You know, this is actually a pretty decent idea and probably, one way they could do a GB3 movie. Well done.

This is the first idea I got excited about. I love the Ivo Shandor angle. But for the love of God, dont let Seth Rogan or any of the Apatow gang near it. Rogan, Franco and Hill especially. No Cera, Jay Baruchel would be OK. No Craig Robinson, hell no Danny McBride. Id like to see Adam Scott in there.

Not bad at all

I liked what I read there, although I agree with jb62 that Ernie Hudson's character should get a larger role. Max Landis' work on CHRONICLE gives me a fair amount of respect for his storytelling skills.

Honestly, I hate the whole Ghostbusters 3 idea. But those were pretty good. He might actually be on to something.

Yet another of today's writers who's more of a fanwanker than a writer because he lacks the talent and confidence to create his own things. No, he'd rather dick around with the puzzle pieces left behind by his betters and make an idiot shaped jigsaw out of them. Fuck off, Landis. You're everything that's wrong with Hollywood latest generation.

Also...

Winston needs to have a significant role in GBIII. Ernie Hudson is a great actor who never really gets the credit he deserves. He and Aykroyd should have starring roles, shepherding the new guys. Think Mr. Miyagi times two.

While I like the Slimer origin idea, that's pretty dark for Ghostbusters. One of the things about the franchise that isn't pointed out a lot is that nobody ever dies in the movies, cartoons, or the game. There are ghosts from people who have died years ago, but there's never any on screen death. There's always the THREAT of death, but it never happens. I hope that stays true for GBIII, but if Ruben Fleischer directs there will probably be a body count.

That opening sounds good.
Personally I really like the idea of rebooting it with Rogen, Franco, Hill and the rest of his crew.

I've always been against "Ghostbusters 3", especially since Harold Ramis passed, but I have to admit I like his ideas. My only issue with the teaser is that Slimer didn't have any connection to Gozer in the first film, and he doesn't seem to play a part in the rest of his pitch when Gozer returns so, while it's cool, ultimately it seems pointless.

The only other thing I'd change (this being a perfect world scenario) is after the bad team summons the Big Bad, have the original Ghostbusters be the ones that reunite the fractured franchises and save the day. The Big Bad could be Gozer, to have it all come full circle, or something new. Also, make sure Oscar is on one of the new teams.

I must admit, he's got some good ideas there. The first thing any Ghostbusters 3 needs to do is address the fact it's not the most popular idea right now. Playing on the nostalgia factor with bringing Gozer back is also an idea that could help generate interest. But Egon is dead, and nothing can change that.

Please no...

Not sure why so many people hate Max Landis, just with Chronicle, thats one more script any of us will ever write, successfully for that matter. I think more of the hate is towards that if anyone lends their two cents to GB3, it'll be immediately shot down, and rightfully so. Reusing the Gozer idea is terrible, the slimer idea is lame and as cool as it would be to see Ghostbuster teams running around with the classic theme song being played, this idea should have been done in 1990, not in 2014.

His plot may seem a bit vague but Damn! I'd love to see that opening segment he described.

I absolutely hate Max Landis, he's a jumped-up spoiled rich kid who thinks he's important because mommy and daddy always told him he was a special boy. Aside from Chronicle, I have never seen any of his work strike a major chord with mainstream audiences (actually, I don't know of any of his work aside from Chronicle that's actually been made into a movie). So I don't get why so many people think this guy is the next coming of christ. And btw, I don't think Chronicle is an exceptional movie

So I don't get why so many people think this guy is the next coming of christ. And btw, I don't think Chronicle is an exceptional movie by any means. I can steal all the common tropes from every other superhero comic/movie and jam them into one story to create a movie too.

All of that said, that concept for a Ghostbusters movie isn't bad. I mean it could use some fine-tuning re: the Slimer idea (I mean why wasn't he helping out during the first Ghostbusters if he knew who Gozer is). And also, really? You're going to use Gozer again? Why not have the same cult idea but have it connected to another entity? The same lazy writing, stealing the plot and story elements of other people's ideas and jamming them into another movie. This guy is not as original as everyone makes him out to be.

I don't think it's stealing if we're still talking about Ghostbusters.

Is there a "be less slappable" setting on this guy? Is there?

Still, that idea for the opening sequence is neat. Slick sell-out rival ghostbusting teams reminded me of Twister, though.

Wish the guy would just go away already. Ghostbusters 3 is going to suck no matter what they do.

Dear Max Landis

Kindly fuck off.
Sincerely, everyone who enjoys movies. All of your ideas, ratcheting slimer in to a cold opening with Shandor, all the meta shit ... Yeah that's pretty fucking stupid and uninteresting - which I guess would fit in with the rest of Ghostbusters 3. So fuck me I guess.

I like the Slimer bit, and the meta stuff could have been like in 21 Jump street flicks.
