Michael Fassbender not sure if he's still Magneto

12.27.2016

Michael Fassbender was a guest recently on the Empire Film Podcast. While the conversation talked about many things, when the prospect of reprising his role as the badass X-Men antagonist Magneto, here's what he had to say:

I don’t know to be honest. I haven’t made any sort of decision on it because I have no idea what’s happening next with the franchise to be honest.

At least he's honest.

On the one hand, I'm going to miss Fassbender's emotional and committed take on the iconic character. On the other hand though, with the Jackman-era Wolverine ending with LOGAN, and the lackluster reception of X-MEN APOCALYPSE, this might be one of the few times a reboot could actually be good for a series. I love Singer's vision for these characters (I count X-MEN 1 and 2 as some of my favorite comic-book movies of all time), but maybe something more colorful and closer to the comics could be a nice change of pace. Also, while I love me some '90s eXXXtreme (and I might be one of the few), did we really want to revisit that era in film form (which was the rumored decade for the next X-Men sequel)?

Anyway, while there are no official plans for a proper X-sequel, there is the aforementioned LOGAN coming out March 3rd, 2017, and a NEW MUTANTS film (starring Maisie Williams from GAME OF THRONES as Wolfsbane) as well.

So what do you guys think? Would you prefer a reboot, or a proper sequel? And what would you like to see, in either case? Sound of below!

Extra Tidbit: If Michael Fassbender plays Magneto one more time, he'd have played the character as many times as Sir Ian McKellan has.

As news is slowly beginning to circulate about X-Men: The New Mutants, the upcoming young adult-aimed spinoff of the core X-Men movies franchise.

The film is written and helmed by The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone. While Boone has teased possible the film’s possible cast of characters and show off cover pages for several drafts of the X-Men: The New Mutants script, it only in a recent interview with Creative Screenwriting that Boone spoke directly about how he came to control the future of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

“After I made The Fault in Our Stars, we made Fox a comic book,” Boone explains. “It walked them through a trilogy of New Mutant films that would build on each other. We used this program called Comic Life, and took all the images we had loved from the series and strung them together to show them the movie we wanted to do.

“We brought it to [producer] Simon [Kinberg] and he really liked it. We’ve been going for the past year and a half to get it ready, and I’m about to go location scout and we have a release date now.”

Fox hasn’t publicly announced a release date for X-Men: The New Mutants, but there are several unclaimed Marvel movie dates on Fox’s schedule. Boone’s quote is also the first time it has been revealed that X-Men: The New Mutants is part of a planned trilogy of movies featuring the characters.

Boone mentioned that the comic book featured artwork from The New Mutants comic books that he and co-writer Knate Gwaltney loved. What comics would that be? Here’s a clue:

“We had loved this X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants. We had loved Bill Sienkiewicz’s run with Chris Claremont that had Demon Bear. It was really dark, interesting, and different from the typical X-Men stories that we had read.”

Demon Bear is a kind of psychic entity who haunted original New Mutants member Dani Moonstar, aka Psyche and then Mirage. The story in which he first appeared is considered to be the point where The New Mutants really hit its stride as a series, both due to the darkened tone and Sienkiewicz’s unique and expressive art.

With production on X-Men: The New Mutants rumored to begin in May 2017, it should only be a matter of time before 20th Century Fox begins making some official casting announcements.

Reboot Please

Man I hope we get a reboot with something closer to the comics. Age of Apocalypse was so disappointing.. And the costumes. Marvel does such a great job interpreting the costumes on screen. why cant Fox/Singer?

Sounds like they are rebooting EVERYTHING

It sounds like Apocalypse was the last of the Singer movies and with Hugh Jackman leaving as Wolverine they are going to reboot everything. It sounded like it was the last film for all of the original cast and nobody was asked to sign contracts for more films from the new cast so its not like a 90s based Xmen sequel is coming up anytime soon. I wonder if they are really going to move forward with the rumored F4-Xmen movie (prolly not though cause that was the rumor before the last F4 movie

Good. They need an X-Men without Magneto in it. The last one ended with the birth of the X-Men team, they can go on from there with a new villain

I liked "Apocalypse" (aside from Sansa's horrible acting), so I'd like to see a proper sequel and keep it going with the cast that was introduced. Shelve Magneto for a couple of movies, then bring him back full force once Marvel and Fox sort their shit out and give us Avengers Vs Xmen.

Time for a break....

I thought he was brilliant in the role and would be happy with him continuing, but I'm not sure if they can find the proper vehicle to keep it moving forward so maybe they need to take a few years off then do something different. They can make smaller movies like Deadpool, but the big team up things need to stop until they have really good ideas again.

I'm fine with it if he's done. Nothing against him or the First Class cast, but nothing will top the nostalgia of the original trilogy & its casting. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in their roles are the center of the X-Men universe for me. The timelines are really convoluted at this point and I'd be fine not seeing the first class cast again.

Wasn't a reboot announced several days ago? Of course he won't reprise his role.

If this truly is the end of the X-Men with a reboot on the horizon, I would really like to see at LEAST one more film with this current cast; primarily because of how amazing the casting of McAvoy, and Fassbender has been through three films with them as Professor Xavier, and Magneto. They casting and chemistry with one another is the primary reason why First Class is my personal favorite X-Men film to date and would be a shame if us fans couldn't get one more X-Men film featuring them together

Respect your opinion but I gotta say I didn't see any chemistry between them that seemed truly authentic. To me, best chemistry was between Jackman and Stewart, Stewart and McKellan, or Jackman and Janssen. Original trilogy all the way.

Difficult to top the original cast, I agree. To each their own, I guess.

I would like them to stop making X-Men films for at least 5 years after Logan, but we all know that's not gonna happen. The reason I want that is because everything has become to convoluted and muddled plot-wise and I'm not thrilled with any of the newer cast members beyond McAvoy and Fassbender. Logan should be the send-off to the old series, then they should wait and take another crack at it.
