Mickey Rourke trashes two of his own upcoming films

04.13.2011

Mickey Rourke has had a strange career trajectory as of late, going from Oscar nominee for THE WRESTLER to bargain bin movie star in a relatively short amount of time.

The actor recently chatted openly and honestly with Vulture about his upcoming films, 13, where he co-stars with 50 Cent, and PASSION PLAY, with Bill Murray and Megan Fox. Neither look terribly good, but Rourke gives it to us straight about how bad they really are in this very terse interview.

You guys (50 Cent) are in a movie together, right?

A really bad movie, yeah.

What?! Is it out?

No, it’s so bad it can’t get out.

Tell me why you made it.

For the money.

But you think the movie’s bad.

Terrible.

Why?

You have to watch it.

What about your movie with Megan Fox and Bill Murray?

Terrible. Another terrible movie. But, you know, in your career and all the movies you make, you’re going to make dozens of terrible ones.

You called Megan Fox, like, one of the best actresses of all time.

That I worked with [smirk].

That movie’s getting limited release.

That’s because it’s not very good.

I don't think every actor will have to make "dozens" of terrible movies, as you are allowed to be selective with roles if you so choose, but Rourke doesn't really seem to give a shit either way. I can't imagine those he worked with will take to kindly to his sentiments here, but it's nice to see a Hollywood star with no bullshit filter.

Was Rourke out of line to trash his own movies like this?

Extra Tidbit: Can you name an actor who you think has never made a terrible movie? The closest I can think of offhand is Jeff Bridges.

I appreciate the fact that hes not bullshitting anyone and that he has the balls to say his movie is bad or good.Robert De Niro lol just kidding. I would say Leo but hes been in 1 or 2 not too great movies like the beach and the basketball diaries. id say Daniel Day Lewis he is very pick with his roles and only does great films. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the same way hes been in only great films. those are just 2 off the top of my head.

Mickey Rourke keeps tripping over

his own stupid, don't he? You don't start dissing your film until the thing's hit DVD; that's the kind of attitude that's going to keep him off casting directors' call sheets. Sayonara, Mickey.

Roddy Piper. I don't know what all movies he's made, but They Live more than compensates for any shit he might have been in. And since it's the only film of his I've seen, I can pretend he hasn't been in anything else.

I really love an honest actor. This is why I can appreciate people like Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf. They tell it straight when few people will. I don't know if Rourke is one to speak, since he's probably made more bad films than good, but at least he's honest about the films, which is nice. We need more people who are honest when trash gets made.

Jeff Bridges

"Can you name an actor who you think has never made a terrible movie? The closest I can think of offhand is Jeff Bridges."

King Kong, Heavens Gate, The Vanishing, The Muse, Masked and Anonymous, Stick It, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, and Tron: Legacy. And those are just the ones ive seen.

As for an actor who has never made a bad film, im tempted to say Daniel Day Lewis, although Nine was pretty bad, although through no fault of his own.

Is he going to get the same heat that Megan Fox received for trashing Transformers?.. Or how about when Katherine Heigl talked badly about Knocked Up? I for one, don't see anything wrong with actors being honest. But it seems some actors get more hate than others for doing this.

I was gonna say John Cazale and also the other (for the same obvious reason) would be James Dean. Daniel Day's only bad one is NINE (a terrible movie). I'd be hard pressed to find a bad movie Cate Blanchet was ever a part of (except Indiana Jones IV:Monkey Shit) and I'd also say Joaquin Phoenix but I've not seen all his films.

Appreciate the Honesty

How many times have we gone and shelled out $6-$20 on a movie that was hyped up by everyone involved and ended up being awful? In a market-driven studio system that can't survive without selfish manipulation, I'm glad that an actor like Rourke is around and kicking.

I dig the honest but why he even chose to be in these movies is a head scratcher to me. I thought post Sin City and The Wrestler Mr. Rourke's days of doing shit movies for the money was long gone, I guess I was wrong. Is it bad that him saying these two movies are so terrible only makes me want to see them more?

John Cazale (for obviosu reasons), and, until recently anyway, Daniel Day-Lewis (I haven't seen "Nine," but from what I've heard...). Off-hand those seem to fit the bill. There are actors who haven't made truly AWFUL movies, and some where the imbalance toward quality makes their missteps negligible. Any actor who has been in the game long enough tends to have a few turds in the bunch. Day-Lewis has just been so picky about his roles he's managed to keep a mostly quality filmography.

Rourke is an unusual case. He's an old-school method actor who against odds managed to make a full-on comeback to the fringes of the A-list, the worse for wear. It's too bad "Passion Play" turned out to be shit, because it had real talent. "13" would probably be a hard movie to market to the mainstream. The original was pretty good, but the last thing the director needed to do was remake it for American audiences.

Sorry Rourke

Obviously the guy is bitter about what's happened. He did the Wrestler, had his big come back, got the huge post-Wrestler role with Iron Man 2 and hasn't had anything since and is back to the direct to video section of your local, dying rental store. I'd be bitter, too. But hey, there's only so much you can get hired for when you look and sound like Nick Nolte if Nick Nolte was a 4th degree burn victim.

I love jeff Bridges and will watch anything he does, but he has made a few stinkers in his time. He did a movie with Sandra Bullock a while back that was pretty forgettable. And there was one where he played Justin Timberlake's dad. The film's heart was in the right place but just not much went into the script or editing..

Oh no, Michael Caine had a stretch (back in the 80's early 90's) where he did a few bad movies. He even admitted to it. Where he was just taking roles for the money.

Take it you've never seen The Swarm? Easily one of the worst movies ever made and proof that it's impossible to make a remotely good movie bout killer bees.

I love that he's honest. You know that the people involved in bad movies have to know they're bad. He's just saying what everyone else is thinking.

Side note: Hey Paul, maybe proofread before posting? You're leaving out entire words that make your sentences unreadable. Come on, man. Take a little pride in your work.

AMEN! I don't think anyone on JoBlo takes 2 minutes to read their own article before posting it.

I like that he is honest, it's not like he still won't be hired.

EXTRA TIDBIT: You need to take a better look at Bridges career. It's more like 50/50....there are a lot of films where you go, "uh? Never heard of it" or "Yep, that sucked."

Other than the one where he is connected to Greg Kinnear, I would agree.

I dig Rouke's honesty. Tidbit: DiCaprio has a pretty solid track record....Tom Hanks too. They have some weak movies, but nothing I'd call terrible.
