New Mortal Kombat: Legacy clip is curiously absent of anything resembling Mortal Kombat

04.08.2011

Seems like it was only yesterday when we first heard that MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY, a new iteration of the popular fighting game from MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH director Kevin Tancharoen, would be getting made into a 10-part live action web series. Yet, here we are with the premiere just around the corner, and now our first peek at a brand new clip from the re-imagined adaptation. Toasty!

But alas, while the emphasis on this project is for a more "realistic" take on the Mortal Kombat material, it's a bit odd to see that this particular clip was the one chosen to promote the series, as it showcases literally nothing Mortal Kombat-ish. Instead, we're shown a generic fight sequence between Jax and Kano that looks like it could've come from a myriad of DTV action films. C'mon, guys, what gives?

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY - starring Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, and Darren Shahlavi - premieres online at Machinima.com on April 12th.

Extra Tidbit: What's your take on the "web series" as a means of exhibition? Good way to expose little known talent? Or just more internet white noise... the equivalent of straight-to-video releases?

Maybe this was better left as an 8 minute short film. The choreography is terrible. Most of these hits just look fake as crap. This is really surprising because I thought the Baraka/Johnny Cage fight was pretty well done. Where's the grittiness of Rebirth? This just seems completely vacant of anything that was good in Rebirth, although it is hard to judge this by only seeing a minute and a half of it, but it does raise a lot of doubt.

What?!?!

I think the article described this perfectly, it looks like some sort of DTV action film. Mortal Kombat? Not so much... not looking forward to it

I wouldnt jump the gun just yet. I mean, it could be a prelude to a larger story or just the first of many fights they get in to. There are many possibilities for where it could go. Wouldnt get pissed just yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is how much of it plays. My hope is that they stick to the ideas and execution in the Rebirth short. This fight is about the same quality as the Johnny Cage-Baraka fight from Rebirth, except that no one had any modifications (which Kano SHOULD have had). I'm still looking forward to the web series, but I'm not getting my hopes up considering it's a web series and the fights are probably not going to be up to standard.

Not bad...

Not great though, but still enjoyable. I can see this being promising still. One thing I don't quite get about the clip is this....It looks like they're fighting in some sort of warehouse/factory atmosphere, so why is there a rack of guns sitting off to the side, it just seems a little out of place to me. I'm still looking forward to the series though!

I have been pretty excited about this, but that fight scene looked like it was out of a "Walker: Texas Ranger" episode. I really want them to get this right to bring a little credibility to the idea of a webisode series...

What gives!?

What do you mean nothing Mortal Kombat-ish about this?? Jax and Kano fighting...hmmm, sounds like 2 'mortals' in 'combat' (albeit without the K). Don't judge the series based on a 1 minute fight sequence that is obviously before Kano got his eye and Jax got his arms. Why do you insist on jumping to conclusions?? You really piss off Mortal Kombat fans. This series will be great, at least in terms of anything previous to do with MK that has hit our screens, so stop bitching and get hyped for this

You might think its not relevant to nothing, "Mortal Kombat-ish", but if you pay close attention to this clip the hidden easter egg is the reason of Kano's Lazer eye and Jax's Bionic arms, it seems both got pretty banged up after that explosion. Its the only way to explain it. Don't you think ?

This is probably one of the first scenes before everything gets all crazy and "Mortal Kombat-ish". The story does start with Jax and Sonya trying to capture Kano if I remember correctly.

This could be the fight that causes Kano to get his eye all messed up. The director already alluded to him losing an eye on Twitter.

There will be plenty of MK stuff, but he's grounding it in reality.

And agreed, it is one clip. Not a big deal. If you look at the released pictures, there is plenty of classic MK stuff to be had.

I couldn't be more hip to this news.

Eh, the director is a HUGE fan of Mortal Kombat... I can see him mixing reality with fantasy. I mean, Scorpion is still a specter...so...

The first little short film/teaser they did was really cool. I just hope this series is good as that and doesn't consist of a few 1 minute episodes like most web series.

Much "grittier" this way!

In fact, I can't wait for it to just be two guys exchanging small talk in an office. Spare me the fluff!

...or just make it look like fucking Mortal Kombat.

I think you're being a bit judgey for such a short clip. For starters, it's a web series, not a high production movie, so the quality isn't going to be superb. You should realize a web series production will probably have a "DTV action" type appearance.

Secondly, we have no idea where this clip takes place in the film. This clip could be a setup sequence for MK related events, or the end result of several events. So just because this clip doesn't appear to be MK related, doesn't mean the

Well when that short film appeared online a few months ago I was surprised everyone dug it so much because it lacked pretty much anything that made 'Mortal Kombat' 'Mortal Kombat'. Yes it had some character names and some vague physical traits; but not much else. 'MK' shouldn't be realistic; it should be over the top and stylized.

I'm guessing that the grenade that was going to explode at the end of this clip was the one to do just that.
