Whlie SPIDER-MAN 4 is still a ways away, the debate over who should be the villain(s) in that film still rages hot. Up until now, smart money was on Lizard whose Curt Connors has been making appearances in previous films (and with the Venom installment of the SPIDER-MAN trilogy having the worst reviews of the bunch, you can bet Raimi will return to Golden Age villains). But Raimi spoke to Empire Magazine and his comments might surprise you. Says Raimi of which villain he thinks is "really cool":

I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius... A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural.

Hmm it definitely is an interesting spin on things to see Spider-Man fighting a villain. Sadly I always felt that the Morbius arcs in the comics were always a little disappointing. For those in the dark, Dr. Michael Morbius was diagnosed with a fatal blood condition. Desperately trying to keep himself alive, he used a serum he concocted partly of bat blood. This, combined with electroshock treatments, transformed him into some kind of man/vampire/bat hybrid. Perhaps not coincidentally, the origin of Morbius in the comics is very closely entwined with...Lizard.

I can't believe the amount of hate Sam Raimi is getting. This guy has made some fantastic films in his career (S1, S2, Evil Dead trilogy, A simple plan) and now he is getting slagged off for one less than decent one. Yeah, I agree Spiderman 3 was easily the worst of the franchise but we all now he wasn't making all the decisions. He should be allowed to make up his own mind on the villains. I

My own opinion, bring on the Lizard with Kraven appearing towards the end which could then carry on the part 5.

Just let Raimi do what he wants. We all saw what happened when they force characters down his throat. If he wants to use Slyde, Spot or Grizzly, I say go right ahead.

Wow, I'm impressed. I think the Raimi hatin' has reached Zack Snyder proportions... I'm not sold on Morbius, but I'm not completely against the idea. Much like many of you, I would love to see Kraven and The Lizard. After having a Conners cameo in all three movies so far, I just don't see how The Lizard could be passed on again. Why even place him in the film continuity at all if you are never

Raimi + Crack = Bad Idea
First off...
As bad as the contrived spiderman 3 script was, the film was still pretty badass...
I am a big spiderman fan and even though I hated the so many coincidental moments in the film:
Eg.
-Meteor landing right directly in front of Peter giving him even more super powers(wow, what a lucky guy, wherever he goes, superpowers just land on his lap). Why didn't Raimi just use the rocket

I still loved the film and found it the most entertaining of the three.
Raimi is not a bad director, he just lost his fucking mind! Someone needs to slap the shit out of him and wake his ass up. Spiderman 3 should not have had Venom in it (My favorite Villain of all time). He should have build up to him, then have Harry and Peter defeat Mega Sandman, then Peter and Mary do their kissy thing while Peter promises Mary Jane to rid himself of the symbiote, and the final scene should have been the bell tower scene and the birth of Venom. That way, you've got a badass ending and tremendous anticipation for part 4! Voila! Instant buzz for Spiderman 4!
But now Raimi is talking this Morbius shit... How about burning through all your A and B level villains before introducing some Z level turd Vampire wannabe. He said Venom didn't interest him, BUT MORBIUS DOES! Come on Raimi, stop smokin that crack!!!!!!!!!!

how ppl were all on Raimis nuts when he was making Spiderman 1 and 2, then 3 didnt live up to their expectations now hes a shitty director WOW. i liked them all and i hope he does more. But i would rather see someone other than Morbius i wouldnt mind seeing Hydro man as the next villain, but all this SM 3 Raimi bashin has gotten old move on ppl.

Spidey 3 was so terrible that I hope to god the dark knight doesn't have a third one. I mean.. the spidey movies were always decent, but at least they were getting better... the second one was considered by many to be "the best superhero film ever made" for a while. I think they tried too hard to outdo themselves.

What's with Hollywood and vampires? When I want an original super villain I've never seen on film before, not one that's in theaters at least twice a year.

I'm all for people trying something new and different but Raimi has lost any creditability that would have me trust any unique decision he makes

Venom was only fucked up because the script was shit and the director thought it was a good idea to see Eric Foreman's face every 5 minutes. Why don't they forget the Vampires and just redo part 3 with a good script without Sandman and J.J.Jamison trying to buy film from Raimi's daughter. Part 3 sucked!

I agree with comments that said bring back Venom which was way underused in Spider-Man 3. But if they bring back Venom, don't bring Carnage into the picture otherwise we'd have the same Venom and Sandman all over again. I'd say bring in Venom and either The Scorpion or Shocker. That'd be awesome.

I basically don't care much about this movie, so wtf. Bring in Morbius, have a Blade cameo in there, go to Transylvania, change Spidey's suit to green and indigo, I really can't give a sh*t about this whole thing. And Sam Raimi sucks balls more

The Morbuis series that came out in the mid 90's was freakin awesome. The drawings were among the best being done and this was in Spawn's heyday. Look 'em up. Vampires are always cool. He turned out to be a good guy. SPIN OFF????

I heard rumors that Bruce Campbell was going to be revealed as Mysterio in SPIDER-MAN 3. My friends and I theorized that, since all the parts Campbell played in the previous Spidey's (wrestling announcer in 1, theatre usher in 2, waiter in 3) are related---in some capacity---to the entertainment industry, and since Mysterio is an expert illusionist, that would be perfect.

Nothing about Morbius really grabs my interest. Maybe if they can fit the Lizard in as well i'll be interested.

Either way I hope that the end of part 4 builds into the use of carnage for part 5. (The way they should have used venom in part 3 to have him become the main villian in part4, in a perfect world).

they need to re-use Venom and make a real spidey vs. venom movie, not a (venom as a side villian in the last 10min of the movie) Ramie completely got venom wrong as a character.

When I was a kid, i always liked the Morbius vs. Spiderman stories. I wouldn't have a problem with that, but if I was writing the script, I would have the Lizard terrorizing New York and his family and Kraven just happens to be in town showing off his latest hunting trophies. After spotting the Lizard, he goes on the hunt for what would be his biggest trophy of all time. That would put Spiderman

After spotting the Lizard, he goes on the hunt for what would be his biggest trophy of all time. That would put Spiderman in the middle of trying to stop the Lizard without seriously hurting him and protecting him from kraven the Hunter. Whoever they pick for the villain though, I already know what will happen in the end. the villain will find out Spiderman's identity and kidnap Mary Jane. Spiderman will have to rescue her and beat the bad guy and he will do it without his mask, like he's done in the 3 previous films.

I seriously wonder if the franchise should be handed off to a new director. Raimi has made 3 pretty great movies (yes I even like 3 despite it's flaws), but the idea of Morbius making an appearance already, over any number of other more worthy foes, is troubling.

We should be seeing Scorpion, Hobgoblin, Chameleon, Mysterio or even Venom done properly. Just my two cents as a fan.

See the problem is thus far the story has focused solely on the random freaks and madmen such as sandman, doc oc, venom, and the goblins. What really needs to be let out of the closet is the neogenetics that made spiderman

If that can be introduced then that opens the door for morbius, lizard, vulture, scorpion, manspider, and maybe possibly also blackcat and kraven if they chose to use neogenetics as an explaination for their strength. Many of them directly or indirectly were created by neogenetics so it stands to reason that soon or later the best way to introduce them is to have another badguy who tries to follow in spiderman's footsteps only to be transformed into something else. Who knows maybe spiderman could even be turned into manspider as a cliffhanger and someone else is introduced to go after manspider. I say morbius is not such a bad idea. Lets let the neogenetic genie out of the bottle and see how many wishes it will grant.

First of all Spiderman 3 didnt fail. It was a monstrous hit at the box office. As for the rediculous dance scenes, I think Raimi was just tired of Spiderman and didnt bother with trying to improve on Spiderman 2.

Morbuis? With Raimi's mind, I'm not surprised. I'd dig it too if he decides to use him, although i'd still like to see the Lizard finally come in...

And for the matter, I think Raimi will make a great Spidey 4. He made 2 pretty good ones and with 3, the studios forced him to male some unwanted choices...

I trust that Raimi will do good with any villain he picks for his films, we've already seen the results in the first three films, Goby, Doc Oc and Sandman were superb in the films taken that he had chosen these villains for his films and we all saw what happened with Venom; Sam didn't really like this character to begin with but the producers thought it would be a good idea to include him but

Morbius VS. Spider-Man would be a very interesting interaction to see in a film, but I still would like to see Lizard, Black Cat, Vulture, Electro and even Carnage but I'm ok with any villain Raimi may want.

Get's back the right to make Spider-Man films I'm most definetly not interested Spider-Man 2 was good but still lacking and I really just do not like 1 and hated 3. Like someone else said no one wants to make another Spider-Man film their just in for the paychecks and Tobey just sucked as Spidey. James Franco is seriously underrated imho though I'd like to see him as Hawkeye.

He was a good villain...but I think its more likely he'll be used due to the whole Twilight phenom tryin to get the ladies in the Spider-Man audience. Good timing I guess. As long as its entertaining I'm down for another fun Spidey movie.

It wasn't because of Venom the third movie failed. It had too many villains. Not to mention the stinking dance scenes.

It wouldn't surprise me if Harry Osborn not looking anything like Green Goblin had something to do with it too.

morbius really wasn't a huge foe for spidey. the concept is good, not just for this film series. he has to fight The Lizard. with the special effects today, they could do a really cool job. but other villians like rhino, electro, the vulture couldn't be done without it being hysterically bad. kraven and the scorpion are the best bets in my opinion.

Id rather see the Lizard, the Scorpian or Kraven myself... but not all three at once.

I would like to see Kraven or maybe the Black Cat to add another love interest in the already boring [link] But ´cause there´s just another Vampire-trend with "Twillight" they might go into that direction. And BTW Venom would have ruled with more than 10 minutes of screentime!

Having little spikes in your fingers and thumbs ain't gonna support a 150 pound Spiderman on a wall without ripping his skin off his bones. So let's dispense with "trying to make it real" and go with what

Marvel has taken too long to get around to the wider comic universe than "earth based, physics based" stories. It's time to bring in Magic, Aliens and the Supernatural.

Give me Dr. Strange, the Shi'ar and Dracula in my next superhero movies :)

Oh, and I'm with Gary -- that f***ing Dance number in SM3 blew chunks. I won't even buy the DVD because I hated that scene so damned much.

His serum was contaminated with Lilin blood which made him part lilin as well. Morbius was one of the Midnight sons with Ghost Rider, Blade and the Nightstalkers. As fas as Im concerned none of these characters should ever be used in film again.

Aren't SM4&5 supposed
to be shot back to back? If so, Morbius' origins in the fourth leading to a fifth movie with the Lizard would be the way to go!

I wish they had the balls to split SM3 in two as intended firsthand. Would've saved it from mediocrity IMHO.
