Rise of the Planet of the Apes could unfold as a trilogy according to writers

08.12.2011

Why cookie rocket? Does it matter? Did you guys love RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES? I didn't expect it to get the praise that it did. I only heard one person say it was terrible. When I told them that everyone I talked to liked it, they laughed at me. I WASN'T TELLING A JOKE MOFO!

Regardless of your opinion of the apes, it seems that the screenwriters of the film, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver would like to make this thing a trilogy.

If you've already seen the movie, then you know it sets its self up for it. I won't go into it for those who haven't ventured out to the theater. You guys can talk amongst yourselves about the ending and plot points and what not.

Here's what the married scribes told EW:

Amanda Silver: I’m touching wood, because I’m superstitious! We definitely have ideas for where the sequel — plural, where the sequels — would take us. And those were kind of built into –

Rick Jaffa: — the construction of the narrative already. There hasn’t been an official discussion yet about a sequel, because I think everyone still doesn’t want to jinx where we are. But we definitely have ideas.

AS: When we started this, we knew that this movie would stand on its own, and we designed it that way. But if it didn’t stand on its own, we pictured a trilogy that would start with this movie.

EW also mentioned the title and ask them what other titles they have planned for future apes films:

RJ: We’re gonna have to figure that one out. That’s a great question. We do have a good sense of what will be in the sequel. Maybe in 20 years, the last one will be called Success of the Planet of the Apes.

AS: It’s that B-movie flair, that excitement. We haven’t found the cheesy-but-fun noun that would fit the action that we’re seeing.

RJ: Maybe Revenge.

Question: how important is it to have seen the orginal POTA films prior to watching ROTPOTA?
I know it's a prequel but I've heard people mentioning amusing and/or informative throwbacks to the originals.
I guess sort of like when I was the only one of my friends who smirked upon hearing "Now that is a BIG door." in Tron: Legacy.

you don't need to see it at ALL. There are a couple nods to the original movie 'a couple characters names COULD be related to some of the cast, crew and characters of the original - but it's just an easter egg, they're totally different characters) that and there is the famous line 'Take Your Stinkin' Paws Off Me You Damn Dirty Ape' but really, you don't need to see or have any knowledge of ANY of the POTA films to see this

Bring It

I loved Rise of The Planet of the Apes. It was a entertaining, emotional, and thrilling; everything I wanted it to be. As a prequel to the original 5 though, there was 1 or 2 problems that don't really connect making it a 'true' prequel. But if they wanted to reboot this and make a new Planet of the Apes franchise.....you'll be seeing my dollars at the theater. Promise you that.

Ceaser, bring it on home!

The last shot of Ceaser knowing the humans are going to come after them was a great and simple shot that sets up whats going to happens. This reboot puts Burton's film to shame. This deserves a trilogy for sure.

Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Ha-Haa-Haaa!!

The above means "That's fudgin' awesome news!" in Caesar-tongue. Awesome movie. Loved every second of it. If there's a good story to tell, I'm all in. If it's a cash-grab and takes away from the first movie, then I hope it never happens.

As long as they keep the same cast and crew (Andy Serkis, WETA, the writers and director) then I'm game for whatever they have to offer!

Can someone explain.

What does "Why Cookie Rocket" even mean? Is Cookie Rocket the name of the brand of cookies? And how does it make any sense in a meme or sentence?

The name of the asshole Alpha male chimp was Rocket. Cesar gave Rocket a cookie, and the orangutan had a limited signing vocabulary. So instead of asking "Why did you give Rocket a cookie?" he signed "Why cookie Rocket?" It still got the point across, but was also funny.

I'm a huge fan of the original Chuck Heston movie, hated the Burton crapfest (except for the cheesy ending), and really liked this version that came out. It was enough of its own movie without having to savagely borrow from the past. I'd definitely be down for more stories set in this world. I even liked how they tangentially tied this movie into the ending of Burton's movie with just one minor scene.

Cool.

Yeah it wasn't that bad of a movie. it kept me interested and it flew by. It would be awesome to see them do something cool with it now. And keep on making it cool. Just as long as they get weta back.

Stoked

These writers can do whatever they want with this series. They hit the nail on the head the first time...no bullshit scenes, just the goods.
And I'm glad they're taking the story slow...letting the relationships and story build naturally. That's what great series are made of. This one is well on its way to outdoing the original series of movies. Believability is the key.

Obviously

There was going to be a sequel. Nothing happened at the end for the apes to want to take over the world.
Basically the 3rd movie of this trilogy is what i thought the first movie was going to be when i went to see it

hope Fox greenlights it asap

Rise was awesome! I liked how the movie actually stands on it's own and didn't leave the usual 'here comes a sequel-cuttoblack!' like most movies do nowadays, but still somewhat left the door open if it was successful. Give me some more!
