Deadline is reporting that River Road Entertainment (THE TREE OF LIFE, FOOD, INC.) has just optioned screen rights to the upcoming novel “The Age of Miracles”.

A Random House book written by Karen Thompson Walker and due for release this June, it tells the story of a young girl who deals with an Earth whose rotation has inexplicably started to slow. The book’s synopsis-

On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia and her family awake to discover, along with the rest of the world, that the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow. The days and nights grow longer and longer, gravity is affected, the environment is thrown into disarray. Yet as she struggles to navigate an ever-shifting landscape, Julia is also coping with the normal disasters of everyday life—the fissures in her parents’ marriage, the loss of old friends, the hopeful anguish of first love, the bizarre behavior of her grandfather who, convinced of a government conspiracy, spends his days obsessively cataloging his possessions. As Julia adjusts to the new normal, the slowing inexorably continues.

Seth Lochhead (HANNA) has been hired to write the script. Bill Pohlad of River Road, who’s a Best Picture nominee for THE TREE OF LIFE, will produce.

“The Age of Miracles” sold to Random House for seven figures, something that’s incredibly rare for a first-time writer. That’s a lot of faith in the novel to do well, so you’ll likely be hearing a whole lot about it in the months to come.
