Rob Zombie's Lord of Salem has a scary mask

04.07.2011

I may be at odds with some of you, and even a few of my fellow editors when I profess my extreme distaste for Rob Zombie horror, but I'll be damned if I haven't watched all of his movies to see what kind of crazy shit he comes up with next.

I'm glad he's moving on from his rather awful HALLOWEEN remake series, and back into original territory with THE LORDS OF SALEM, the film "set in contemporary Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches."

Zombie just tweeted this first official image from the film, and it shows presumably the get-up of one of the titular "Lords," who is wearing a rather terrifying mask. It is hard to come up with new scary mask ideas in this day and age where seemingly most possibilities have been exhausted, but I do like the simplicity of it. Though I can't shake the feeling that it looks like a hybrid between a Cactuar and a Minecraft Creeper.

Are you a Zombie (not zombie) horror fan? If so, why?

Extra Tidbit: I couldn't get through 1000 CORPSES the first time I watched it. Oh, those were the days, back when horrifically brutal movie violence still bothered me on occasion.

Rob Zombie is one of the best directors of recent years..House of a 1000 corpses.brilliant!..Devils Rejects..brilliant!..Halloween movies...loved 'em..took the story in different directions..not just remakes..always going to piss off fans of the originals which were also great movies, well 1&2 were great..the rest were CRAP!...much stronger language needed for that description really..cant wait for Lords Of Salem!

I wonder if Zombie is gonna interject extreme cursing like all his other movies.

The movie he's stealing from is...

Mario Bava's "Black Sunday". I suggest all the horror newbs check it out. As for Zombie, I wouldn't call him a hack exactly, but he's far from an auteur. He's not doing anything that hasn't been done before--and he doesn't even do it all that effectively. Corpses was an absolutely laughable attempt at horror. Rejects was far better--clever writing even--dare I say "Scorcesian" use of soundtrack gems and as far as his other output is concerned, I think the less said the better. If there's

If there's anything good about "Lords of Salem" I'm sure it'll be directly nicked from "Black Sunday". No offense to Zombie, seems like a nice guy and all and is certainly a fan but just not a great "artiste". Keep trying though, Rob. The Beatles went from "Love Me Do" to "I Am The Walrus" in less than a decade and, god knows, EVERYONE has the right to chase their dreams. I'm rooting for him but I haven't seen much to deserve the cult following.

Not a fan

I really just can't stand his movies, I like the mask though and agree that it looks like a cross between Corey Taylor's mask and Leslie Vernon

That mask looks like Corey Taylor(slipknot) mixed with Leslie Vernon. About the tidbit: I liked House and Rejects. Halloween 1 was actually decent in the second half(Tyler Mane was great as Michael). Halloween 2 was garbage(except the hospital scene which was a damn dream). I actually have superbeasto the comic and it's alright. The movie sucked.

On the fence

I enjoyed House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects. Not a fan of his Halloween films or El Superbeasto though.

Disgusting doesn't equal scary.

Does Rob have the guts to stop hiding behind his own mask of gore and juvenile humor long enough to actually tell a good story... and maybe be more respected as a director?

If I find out this guy finally rises above bush league and amps up the scariness and tones down on the gore and white trash characters, I'll check it out.

Zombie's the man

Really liked all his movies, even the Halloween remakes. This picture has me really excited for this film though i hope he does stray away a little bit from his normal actors.

I like Zombie..

But Halloween 2 sucked really bad...

That "mask" looks like a hand made Hannibal Lector mask and Jason's Hockey mask...

Zombie certainly shows potential (except for Halloween 2; that was just bad), but he's gone over board with the rednecks. There doesn't have to be psycho rednecks everywhere. Think of something new.

I like zombies work. i didnt bother to watch halloween 2 but i didnt hate the first one if im being honest. Loved TDR more than 1000 corpses but hey they were original stories so im all for this. Keep it up Rob maybe you can save the horror genre.

If it doesn't hinge on shock and disgust

Rob Zombie has nothing to offer.

House of 1000 Corpses was creepy enough, but when watched in conjunction with The Devil's Rejects is when I think both films really shine. I really liked TDR a lot and I fuckin' LOVED the soundtrack. Still Zombie's best film work so far IMO. Looking forward to this.

RZ would be ok, if everyone in his movies wasnt a whitetrash, foul-mouth drunk/druggie. Sure you'll have that every now and then, but it seems like he over-exploits that particular characteristic so much that its too distracting and annoying in his movies.

I like Zombie's stuff. I think he has the potential to make a really great horror someday. The more he stays away from remakes and sequels, though, the better. I think he has a raw Grindhouse style which is refreshing in today's world of glossy Hollywood horror. He's definitely not afraid to get bloody or brutal. Each of his films show elements of great horror but hasn't really hit on a project that brings it all together to make that great flick that he has in him. I think Zombie has a lot of potential in being a great subtle horror director. I'd love to see him apply a "less is more" type of story.

I love him as a musician and director. He's super ballsy in his choices and I am part of an apparently small group who LOVES his Halloween remakes. (I own and love the originals too :) This movie will be intense.

This is a stretch and I'm not a Zombie fan, but his original stuff seems like his comfort zone. I'd be interested to see him tackle a genre that would go against type.

trust in Zombie

Halloween 2 was like Spider-Man 3... the studio fucked it up, not the director. The studio forced him to do things he didn't want... which basically was the movie as a whole.

Other than that Zombie's been great as a director, can't wait to see his next feature.
