Rumor: Is Universal Releasing A Namor The Sub-Mariner Movie In 2016?

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Universal Pictures recently put a placeholder on the date of Friday, November 4th, 2016, for a "secret" tentpole movie from Legendary Pictures. There are no confirmed details other than its being called an "Untitled 2016 Event Project," and that it's not a sequel or remake; though it may be based on an existing property. So what is the untitled mystery "event" film being released in 2016? Well speculation is rampant on this one as Latino Review is reporting that the film could be the one superhero Universal still has the rights to: Marvel’s NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER.

In case he's not your favourite superhero, here's a quick rundown:

Namor is a hybrid of human and Atlantean DNA, he possesses a fully amphibious physiology suited for extreme undersea pressures, superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, flight, and longevity. Namor has the ability to survive underwater for indefinite periods, and specially developed vision which gives him the ability to see clearly in the murky depths of the ocean.

There is evidence however that gives this story credence; Zac Efron was recently given a new Marvel script. There was no word on which script it was, but Efron did just give Universal huge weekend numbers with NEIGHBORS. Also, Warner Bros. is releasing JUSTICE LEAGUE in 2017. That movie is expected to include Aquaman, and what better way to ruin a party than to have yours just before theirs.

Again, this is just a rumor about Namor, a movie that doesn’t even have a script, let alone a director. Other suggestion around the Interwebs say it's Will Smith’s BRILLIANCE, the HOT WHEELS movie, and even the forever in development hell MASS EFFECT movie.

So this is where you guys come in: Who would you like to see star or direct NAMOR if it were to happen? I know one director who just loves going underwater, he basically walks on it with every new release of his; I'm talking about JC himself, James Cameron. Sure he's busy for the next decade making AVATAR sequels but as long as we are throwing around ideas.
