Saban Films nabs the U.S. rights to Michael Caine-led King of Thieves drama

Word has come in that Saban Films has snagged the U.S. distribution rights for KING OF THEIVES, an upcoming crime drama from director James Marsh (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, SHADOW DANCER). The much anticipated film stars Sir Michael Caine (DUNKIRK, GOING IN STYLE), Jim Broadbent (ANOTHER YEAR, THE IRON LADY), Sir Tom Courtenay (45 YEARS, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO), Sir Michael Gambon (GODSFORD PARK, the HARRY POTTER franchise), Ray Winstone (BEOWULF, THE DEPARTED), and Charlie Cox (DAREDEVIL, STARDUST), and is produced by Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner alongside Michelle Wright and Ali Jafaar, with STUDIOCANAL financing.

Written by Joe Penhall, KING OF THIEVES is based on source material from Mark Seal’s Vanity Fair article and The Guardian’s veteran crime reporter Duncan Campbell. When the feature arrives sometime during the first quarter of 2019, the story will center around the April 2015 Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company burglary in which robbers allegedly stole over £14 million worth of loot in the biggest heist in UK history.

In talking about the project's stellar cast of Hollywood elite, Saban Films' Bill Bromiley said, “The pedigree of Michael, Jim, Tom, as well as Working Title make a very attractive package. We absolutely love this film!”

The heist motif of KING OF THIEVES will serve as a return to old stomping grounds for Caine, who in 2017 starred as an elderly bank thief for director Zach Braff's GOING IN STYLE. In the comedic comedy, Caine acts alongside Alan Arkin, Ann-Margret, Matt Dillon, Chistopher Lloyd, and Morgan Freeman for a film that focuses on three lifelong pals who risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.
