Speed Racer in IMAX

03.04.2008

When I was a kid I always used to see those Lucky Charms adverts and wish I could get to the end of the rainbow, so I could see what one would look like up close. Fortunately I'll be able to find out this Summer since SPEED RACER is gonna be released in IMAX. I can't imagine what this thing is gonna be like on massive screens or whether human brains are capable of withstanding such relentless assaults of color, but I'd recommend paying neighborhood kids to stand around and throw Skittles at you for at least an hour a day to try and prepare yourself. Opinion seems to have been pretty diametric in regards the trailer we saw a while back, but I thought it looked great and I'm pretty excited about it. The story, of course, follows young Speed (Emile Hirsch) and his quest for racing glory. There's probably another trailer on the horizon, so if you ain't sold yet you might be before the Summer. The film co-stars John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, the super cute Christina Ricci, and a monkey.
Extra Tidbit: Henry Rollins was once offered the role of Racer X on an old version of the film that had Johnny Depp playing Speed.

I only said that when I thought of the wachowskis, darker and serious themes came to mind. I never really cared for Speed Racer, so whatever. Im just shocked at how crappy it looks compared to their previous work: the great "Bound" and visually stunning "Matrix" films (I stress "visually" because I disliked the second one and absolutely hated the third).

Oh well, keep your unnecessary live action speed racer. I'll pass.

afulinara:
You seriously expected a "dark and realistic" Speed Racer? Again, Speed friggin Racer, as in the goofy, fun cartoon from the '60s?

You were just setting yourself up for disappointment, by expecting something like that. Judging from the trailer, it looks exactly as "dark and realisitc" as it needs to be; in other words, not very dark or realistic at all.

Whats the point in adapting animation into live action while trying to make it as cartoonish as possible? If you want the cartoony effect... hmm... WHY NOT JUST WATCH THE ANIME!?!

When I heard the Wachowskis were making Speed Racer, I automatically saw a darker, more realistic Speed Racer... and I liked that thought. I just never guessed anyone could possibly go from Bound and The Matrix, to Willy Wonka on Wheels.

OK

First, this info is not up on the IMAX website, which I know doesn't mean anything.

Second, and I may be the only one saying this, but I was not really that impressed with the trailer. I looked like an f*cking cartoon, rather than a movie, which is what it is trying to be. I love the anime, but come on it just doesn't look that great.

I think the only reason this is happening, is because of the summer line-up and potential blockbusters staking a claim around this film.

May 2, Iron Man...My 3rd must see

May 9, Speed Racer...ok

May 16, Prince Caspian... families will flock to this flick for christian beliefs and its an established story already.

May 22, Indiana Jones, my most anticipated of the summer.

Come on, WB got cold feet with 2 huge Paramount films in one month, and are trying to pick up the slack.

Whatever

I had high hopes for this thing UNTIL the trailer came out and basically we found out that Super Mario was Speeds dad and that the Wasckowskis had just made a fruit loop colored kiddie movie. I thought speed was going to be done in a less flashy but more serious way with awesome car racing instead of CGI for Sonic the Hedge Hog loopy loops.

Speed Racer Imax style

Oh yeah, now thats what i'm talking about, Speed Racer in IMAX is the perfect move for this type of movie. You can't just watch it, you have to live it! Just like Batman Begins was to me and soon Speed and The Dark Knight! I wish The Hulk was going IMAX, but hell count me in!!!!
