Star Wars: Episode VIII officially titled The Last Jedi

01.23.2017

Star Wars The Last Jedi

The speculation ends today on what might have been the title for director Rian Johnson's chapter in the Skywalker saga, STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII. Lucafilm released the following bit of information on StarWars.com, of which I've included for you in full. Come December 15th, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI hits theaters!

We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.

THE LAST JEDI is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

And you thought that this would be just another Monday! "The Last Jedi" is a seemingly straightforward title, albeit a good one. We could assume that it's talking about Luke Skywalker, although the term "Jedi" can refer to more than one person. Will Rey become a Jedi by the film's end? Are there more Jedi to be discovered throughout the galaxy? We'll have to wait until December to find out! In the meantime, click on the banner above to check out a poster variation of the new title!

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI will open in theaters on December 15, 2017.

I think why I'm not very fond of this title is that all the previous saga titles (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens) refer to a physical or spiritual event, while this one (The Last Jedi) refers to one or more characters.

Gotta say. Feels lazy. But then again, they could have named it Luke Takes a Dump and we'd all be watching it anyway.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with most of you and say I do not like the title.

Love the title. Here's my theory... Luke is the last Jedi. There are no other Jedi hiding out there (if there were, Yoda would've known about it in Return of the Jedi). He is certainly the only Jedi remaining at the end of Force Awakens. While everyone assumes Rey will eventually become a Jedi, I'm not sure that's the case. My theory is that Rey is actually the prophecy child mentioned in Phantom Menace who will bring balance to the force. It wasn't Vader. He didn't balance shit, not even

The reason Rey's parents are a mystery is that she has no parents, and was conceived by the force. Maybe this means she will transcend the whole Jedi thing to become something far greater. Therefore, maybe Luke truly is the last Jedi.

Loving this title, no matter who or what it ends up referencing. It's bold and powerful, yet wonderfully simplistic. I hope Johnson knocks it out of the park with this!

How long...

... until we hear someone involved with the movie call The Last Jedi "The best Star War since Return of The Jedi!!!"? That's the Star War article I'm waiting for.

Although it's been couple years since they've announced him as director, I still went a little bit ape shit when I read the words, "THE LAST JEDI is written and directed by Rian Johnson..."

Star Wars: One Last Ride? Jk. Love the title. It's simple, and a great nod to VII's end & VIII's possible storyline. And I love the red font!

Luke....

Perhaps this speaking retrospectively and positioning hopefully what I want to see which is Luke's journey since episode 6. Maybe this episode is about Luke's search either for or as the last Jedi rather than a nod to Rey taking up the mantel.
As for the guy dissing the PC women shite - the first 3 films inspired one of the greatest female characters and people of the last 30 years - in my opinion Leia was amazing and even with Rey now her stamp on films in general will never be replaced.

Disrespectful of him to bring this up given Fishers recent passing and the significance females have played in Star Wars previously

I LOVED what Leia was about you idiot. She was a leader. I didn't look upon her as some frail skinny girl. This shit with Rey is all about girl power bullshit and you know it. Kathleen Kennedy has made that known, and even says they are actively seeking a female director, just for the sake of having a female director. Don't EVER assume anything about me when all you read was my anti-feminist diatribe. Modern feminism has NOTHING to do with equality. In case you haven't noticed,

Girl power bullshit? Why is her gender never even really pointed out in the film or made to feel important, then? You're throwing Rogue One under the bus, that character could have switched genders and the script could have still been left identical. The gender was a non-issue. You are trying to make a gender politics issue where none exists. Men on the backburner? Is that why we are finally JUST NOW getting a female lead in a superhero movie this year? Rey is no more "feminist bullshit"

So does this mean Luke is killed?

Surely hope not. I can't stand Rey. I have nothing but putrid hate for her character. I welcome your downvotes, because I'm sick of this shit. If it was up to me, Luke is still the hero and survives all three films. The first movie, and feminist outpouring really turned me off to this series. Having a female leading some of the production ruined this shit too. Notice the last couple toy commercials had LITTLE GIRLS as the leads playing with what used to be boys toys? Fuck this series

When you've been privileged your whole life, equality feels like oppression.

Sorry that the largest film franchise of all-time wants to connect with those other than yourself. Must be pretty lonely to hate women and minorities so much that even showing up in movies offends you.

I think the mindset beneath your thin-skinned, petulant whining is more damaging to masculinity than what gender action figures are being marketed. Toughen up.

Maybe the Jedi in this case is plural, and refers to Rey and Luke.
Like how The Last Samurai refers to the group of Samurai, and not Tom Cruise

You're right. Jedi is plural or singular. They have never said Jedis in the entire franchise.

It's singular. the correct grammar, it was plural, would be "The Last of the Jedi." In this case, "The Last Jedi" is one noun. If Rey survives and Luke is killed off, I certainly won't give a shit about part 9.

The Last Jedi or the last of the Jedi and they can both mean one Jedi or more.

Excellent title. Ambiguous so we don't know who, how many are being referred to, or what context. Very cleverly done. Love the red, sinister font, too.

My only gripe is that it falls in line with the new Transformers title, a franchise known for being the last to copy all other blockbuster titles. But no matter -- bring on The Last Jedi!

It's only ambiguous of WHO it is, not how many. As I stated in my other reply, if it was more than one, the title would have been "The last of the Jedi."

They thought this through, and I don't think they'd screw up the grammar part.

What? No it wouldn't. The producers chose this title because it's simpler and costs less to promote. It's also far more eloquent and to-the-point without "of the," like every other blockbuster has in its title. It's intentionally ambiguous and minimalist.

I like the title. I hope that I am just being stupid for speculating as follows. However, The Last Jedi hopefully does not indicate that Mark Hamill is retiring his Luke role and passing the lead Jedi role onto Ray. However, the two previous trilogies have middle chapters darker than their previous chapters. Of course, Revenge of the Sith went even darker than Attack of the Clones, so any pattern is not necessarily there. We shall see what we shall see in December. What "all is lost" moment

Wonder if this means Luke is the last Jedi, or he will pass the baton on to someone else, making him/her the "last Jedi". Can't wait!
