Surfer goes solo

06.14.2007

Rise of the Silver Surfer Fox no doubt expects FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER to perform at least as well as the original did at the box office (though they're, of course, hoping it outperforms the original by a wide margin) so it's no surprise that they're already looking to develop (Note: registration required to access the site) a solo project for the film's titular argent star. They've set TV and comic writer J. Michael Straczynski to pen the screenplay and, in an effort to appease the fans that were downright disgusted by RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER's goddamn PG rating, they're hoping The Surfer's film skews considerably darker and grittier than his blue spandex-wearing companions' pictures. Straczynski, a former writer for "The Twilight Zone" and "Babylon 5", is quite familiar with The Surfer's world, having recently published the first of four issues of a "Silver Surfer: Requiem" series. More importantly, though, what do you guys think about The Surfer getting his own flick?

I'm not expecting great things from F4:RSS, but if anyone can successfully bring the origin of Norrin Radd to the screen, it'd be the greatest comic book writer of the current generation.

also, I agree with Stock. The exception might be Punisher, who could be considered mainstream, but doesn't have to be.

On a side note, the soundtrack spells his name as Noren Radd. Do you fucking believe that?

As was iterated before..

Why? Rather see a Cosmic Powers flick w/ Thanos, Jack of Hearts, Terrax, Surfer fight against Galactus/Tyrant or Celestrials (Although, too much for live action, better as CG ala TMNT) There are some properties that just won't translate well as live action ($$$-major factor)

Please, for fucks sake, do not let Tim Story direct this movie, give it to someone else. Let Story continue to ruin the FF, I don't give a rat's ass about them anymore.

If you didn't see this bit of news coming a looong time ago your an idiot, that's what I think about the news.

I never cared for Surfer though, I do care that the world intelligence seems to be going down hill with all this commenting about various film ratings.

JMS is a damn good writer though. Love his work on Amazing, so if the trailer for Surfer looks good I'll watch it.

First, stock, The Punisher (both versions) have been rated R, as have all three Blade films, which were moderate successes in the mainstream. Marvel has no problem with adult material, they created the MAX imprint for God's sake.
However, a dark Silver Surfer movie? From the studio that brought us Alien vs Predator and Live Free or Die Hard?

An R rating? That has to be a joke. I have no clue what this site's pre-pubescent facination is with R ratings for every stinking flick that comes out, but I guarantee that no Marvel or DC mainstream character will ever have an R rated film. Blade was not mainstream, but the FF and its world is. So forget it. And how do I feel about a Surfer solo flick. The same way I do about a Magneto solo flick, or a Jinx from Bond solo flick. Why bother? If he's great in this one, bring him back in FF3, The

The whole reason I'm up for this new Fantastic Four movie, apart from expecting a pretty fun flick, is to see the damn Surfer already! It will be a good launch for him, even if the movie itself sucks. This way at least people will know more about him beforehand. It's a good idea, to me, no matter what the outcome of what I think of the movie itself.
