OK ...

... I know most of you have already seen the movie, but I just saw it today cause it just started showing in my country. No word can describe this movie. This is something that happens once in a lifetime. Nolan has taken a comic book and made it something much, much more. This is a movie that grabs viewer and just doesn't let go. Ever. A lot could be said about this movie, but the best thing is to see it. And about the sequel: why not?

I loved the movie, and have already posted my feelings, but I've read everyone's thoughts.. the good, the bad.. I wanna know, from all of those who disliked the film, what movie was more entertaining this year? (other than Iron Man) I can't seem to remember anything else coming close. Maybe I'm forgetting, but please, remind me.

Overall the movie was great, like anything it has flaws, nothing will ever be as perfect as you want it to be. We're not Siskel and Ebert here though, we are people who loved Batman and the comics, and wanted to see them come to life. I could care less about the merit, or if it's ever some film masterpiece. It made me happy that someone took the time to invest so much into making comic films more than something just one dimensional.

No, I don't care much for the romances but it goes a long

No, I don't care much for the romances but it goes a long with the territory. As far as anyone having corny dialogue, again if you read comics not everyone has this quick wit or amazing banter to carry them. You leave all that to the principal characters, as much as you can anyway.

But instead of going on and on, I'll say this, it lived up to my own expectations as a fan of Batman and as a fan of comics. Yes, Iron Man was good but this had me glued to each and every little word and what was about to happen next.

Someone will tear it apart, but it won't be me.

It's funny to see people attach to such minor things and try to base entirely negative reviews on them. Who cares if there's a lot of "bystander chitchat"? Woop-dee-fricken-doo if they reused some of the elements of previous Bat films? So what if you think Maggie Gyllenhaal is ugly? Maybe it was her personality and honesty that Bruce Wayne was after? (And her willingness to do full-frontal?)

Never, ever, has Batman been presented this way. It bubbled to the surface in Begins and took over in

Never, ever, has Batman been presented this way. It bubbled to the surface in Begins and took over in this movie. The seriousness, the heart-wrenching tragedy, the decisions where every option has a bitter end... I mean, SURE, in Batman Forever, Batman had to choose between Chase and Robin, but he ended up (predictably) saving both. In TDK, he isn't so lucky.

With every movie, there are bound to be minor details that are unbelievable. Base your enjoyment of the movie entirely on that, if you wish. I, for one, thought that the plot, acting, action sequences, etc, made up for all that and then some.

In addition to the last few posts...

So far this years releases have been far weaker then last years. We have no "Zodiac" caliber films. We have over-hyped "master-pieces" like Dark Knight, and Iron Man, which people will only realize down the line, like they did with stuff like Titanic, just how uneven and undeserving it is of the acclaim that goes with it being a great movie, or more disappointing would be if it were crowned best movie of the year on any level (aside from the fanboy circles). Enjoy it all you want, no problem

Enjoy it all you want, no problem with that what-so-ever. If you can't see the films flaws, so be it, but at very least allow others to express them just as most of you have no problem stating how kick-ass everything is. No one is saying the other isn't right... we all have our opinion on the film.

Just to add, I agree with whoever pointed out the lame "by stander" dialogue. Stuck out like a sore thumb, as did the cartoon-y mob crew. And did anyone else notice how many characters get thrown off buildings? Not counting when Batman takes nose dives, I count 5! And I know we can universally agree that none of us had a second of doubt regarding that boat climax. Why so serious? Not at all... seems like the filmmakers were trying really hard though, and for their efforts, it shows. And this isn't about going against the grain, or standing out as a negetive review... the film has massive flaws (in my opinion), and they're worth addressing so future adaptations of this kind of material don't suffer. There wasn't one lesson learned in Knight that wasn't based on a something one character said, and that another repeated later word for word. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Syd Field was script adviser on this thing.

here is the thing...

Here is the thing for me... yeah.. maybe some of these nitpicks are true... certain scenes in the beginning made me minorly cringe.. so be it.. no other super hero let alone action film has taken such a complex and just intelligent approach to the subject. The nature of heroism, of good and evil... and actually says a lot of profound things about the two, and about humanity all while keeping you glued to the seat.

For the whole movie not only was I engaged I actually felt the fear of oh shit what's going to happen next, what is the joker up to.. the fear of terror.. of anything bad could happen to any of these characters at any time... no one was safe etc. The real terror of madness.

That and it just being a smart film... made it for me.

Well done.

I agree with everything kdraines said regarding Two-Face and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The other thing that bothered me a lot [and even after watching it again] was the random bystander comments. I hate stuff like that. It was super excessive in the Spider-Man movies and was damn near close to as bad in this. That scene with the armored car driver was nearly intolerable. 'Oh no, that's bad!' 'Oh no, that's REAL bad!!' 'I'm not paid for this!' all of that lame shit took me out of it for a second. A

A plain and simple 'Holy Shit!' would suffice instead of constantly intercutting the scene with his cornball reactions. Leave it for Michael Bay movies.

WOW

Seen all superhero movies and none has kept me glued like this one.

It was fun, entertaining, and thrilling. I cant say more than what most have said...but to the poopypants below that are bashing saying it wasnt good enough..you know you liked it, you just think your cool cause you want to go against the grain.
Joker was great, shame Ledger took his acting with him.

It was definitely good

Though I don't think it's the best superhero movie, I still think that belongs to X2. I think it's the best comic movie this year without a doubt. Not a masterpiece imo, but definitely a good time at the theater.

It's no doubt the best comic book hero based film ever made , but i do agree that the Joker's schemes seemed a bit fantastical unbelievable considering that Nolan says he's trying to make the universe as realistic as possible .

Why do i keep getting BF flashbacks with Nolan's films . The highway sequence reminded me of the one in BF when Two Face shot the rocket launcher at the batmobile , except Joker did it in this one . And lol , how did batman get out of the way , the wheels turned

And lol , how did batman get out of the way , the wheels turned sideways and the car moved to the side out of the way . The batcycle did this in Tdk , it's wheels turned to the side so it could be maneuvered to the side , only difference was that it wasn't to get out of the way of a rocket but to merely quickly change direction .

The what is it with

Spoilers

The sequence when batman has to make a choice about who he should save , Rachel or Harvey , did anyone else get another BF flashback when Batman was forced to make a choice about who he should save , Robin or Chase . This stuff is getting more and more like the other Bat films and it's starting to remind me of the tv show also , when they would have a cliffhanger , you know someone hanging over a pool of acid , dun dun dah , how will he save them .

Hey , i give Nolan credit , he's cannibilized all the elements of the previous bat incarnations and made it seem like his own , now that's talent , but i'm not fooling myself , i know what these films are , they are remakes , he simply toned down the whimsy and flamboyance .

But seriously , how come the joker is invincible in this film , he took a beating at the hands of Batman and he didn't have a mark on him , then he flips over in an 18 wheeler and he didn't have a scratch on him . he runs all over gotham and nobody recognizes him even though he has massive scars around his mouth lol . How come nobody saw that he was part of the honor guard for the commisioner's funeral , he was standing right in front of the podium , man these cops are dumb LOL .

I guess there is no real way to do the joker totally realistic , he's inherently fantastical .

Here's what Heath reminded me of . Joe Pesci with makeup , the Mask ( Carrey version ) , the Riddler ( Carrey again ) Freddy Krueger , Rainman , Two Face ( TLJ version ) and Chucky . It was a venerable cornucopia of other characters distilled into one . I kept thinking , man i know iv'e seen this before any time he would do something . It's still great , although i don't feel it's entirely original .

Best Movie I've seen this year!

The Dark Knight delivered on all its promises and than some. I would rank it equal to Batman Begins (my favorite comic book movie of all time), but that could go up after another viewing. Begins had Batman/Bruce Wayne the main focus, which I loved and somewhat missed from this one, with more focus going to Dent and the Joker. But the story between these charcters was executed perfectly, working on a level of a detective movie and a superhero movie (after all, DC stands for detective

Heath absolutely owns as the Joker. It's a mix of Hannibal Lecter, Jack sparrow, and Barden's charcter from no country for old men, all of which were Oscar dominated roles. It was one of the most innovative interpretations I've ever seen on screen.

Others deserving of mention are Bale, Oldman, and Eckhart. Aside from Bane, I always thought two-face got the worst treatment in the previous films, and it was great to see him get the development he deserves.

I'd love to see Nolan get a nomination for directing or writing, he definitely deserves it. His Batman franchise is earning it's place next to LOTR or the original Star Wars trilogy.

So, is the 3rd movie going to be called "The Caped Crusader"?

Glad to see someone being sensible about the whole thing. Dark Knight is not an awful movie, but definitely not worth the hype surrounding it. Joker's schemes exist and succeed only to serve the film, but if you take but a moment, or if you're actually paying attention, there is loads of questionable stuff that just doesn't flow. I won't get into the rest of the stuff, I just don't have the energy or mind to face so many rabid fans. Just glad to see someone actually watched the movie with their

LOVED IT

I absolutely loved this movie. Just one thing.

Maggie Gyllenhall is the opposite of hot.

I couldn;t imagine a motherfucking billionaire who dates several models at a time, dying to be with this chick.

In fact her pig nose took me out of it every time I saw her. Katie Holmes may not be as good an actress, but her hotness made her bearable. Maggie G just made me recoil. Of all the the hot young talented ass in Hollywood, I cannot fathom why they chose her. Great actress (Sherrybaby), but

I enjoyed this one, but I don't think it's quite the masterpiece everyone's making it out to be. Most of my nitpicks are small, though, like the running time, and a few plot points that didn't quite have the impact they should have. (One plot point featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal's character in particular which left me indifferent)

Not much need be said about Ledger's performance that hasn't already been said, but I was surprised at how much I laughed. (The disappearing pen act--hilarious!) I

I also loved the darker atmosphere and cinematography (those shots of Batman flying and jumping off buildings were just breathtaking) as well as Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face and Maggie G. as Rachel.

Is it just me, or did she look really great in this movie?

Despite some of my reservations, I wouldn't mind seeing another one. So even though I don't think it's the "best movie ever," I do think it's a very good movie.

One thing for kdraines...

The Joker always does seem to be ahead of the game in this film. He started off with little heists and murders to: 1. turn gotham against itself 2. turn Dent from the White Knight to a dark one 3. Try and get Batman to break his one rule. While he did fail on 2 of the 3, he was able to push everything to the limit. Other than that, you're definitely right -- it was an angst-driven film -- which I personally loved.

But at the end of the day, to each his own.

The movie was fucking amazing. It raised the bar so high i'm not sure it can be reached again anytime soon.

The only problem with it though, what with all the quick cuts around the violence?? I hope they add that shit back in on the DVD.

My turn...

Nothing I can say that hasnt been said, Loved it. Though I was hoping to se it in IMAX, all the IMAX theatres around me are SOLD OUT! for the week! Would love to have seen Alfred hit the Joker or one of his henchmen with a golf club though when they crashed the party! Ledger was GREAT! but my fav was Eckhart, he nailed it! Cant wait for "Batman Retires" or whatever Nolan will call the next one!

brilliant

Just saw it for the second time, in IMAX. Upon first viewing, I loved it, but thought it ran a bit too long and was overcomplicated. No more. The plot alone is a work of art, with each sequence perfectly setting up the next. This is a film that demands repeat viewings and delivers an embarrassment of cinematic riches. A masterpiece? Ask me in ten years. One of the best movies of the year so far, right up there with Wall-E? You bet your ass. Introduce a little anarchy.

Seriously, if you actually WANTED to see if you would have bought your tickets online ahead of time... you didn't and therefore knowing this movie would sell out, you are an idiot. Also, the fact you feeling typing in CAPS makes it mean more only shows how little we should care about you.

Dark Knight was BAD ASS though! :D

I went to see it tonight BUT IT WAS ALL SOLD OUT.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TERRIBLE OF A FEELING THAT IS? ANTICIPATING THE DARK KNIGHT BUT NOT GETTING TO FUCKING SEE IT?

CAN YOU IMAGINE MY LEVEL OF DEPRESSION??? THE ANGUISH I'M EXPERIENCING???

I WISH THIS ON NO ONE, NOT EVEN SCHUMACHER.

***Spoilers***
I know Ive already wrote something but its been 2 days since Ive seen it and I cant get its greatness out of my head, kind of like when I saw Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas the first time. Writer19 has explained it the best is that it really does make every other comic book movie look like shit but for me it does go beyond being just another comic book movie it is a great movie and a great addition into the crime thriller genre. I just cant get the performances out of my head

I just cant get the performances out of my head especially the interrogation scene and the scene where the joker visits Harvey in the hospital after the bomb. And also the scene where Rachel and Harvey are tied up and talking to eachother on the phone so gut wrenching and powerful some of the best acting ever and you can see why he becomes so pissed off he really did love her and the Joker took that from him. And the way they ended the movie just characterized Batman so well, is that he is selfless and he doesnt want credit for his deeds. And throughout the movie where he was battling whether or not to kill the Joker fantastic. Heath Ledgers Joker can kick Jacks Jokers ass ne day and thats coming from a huge Jack fan. I just cant keep on saying enough good things about the movie I loved it. Consider my DVD bought.

The one and only problem with Dark Knight is that it makes every single other comic book movie look like total shit.

brilliant

i thought it was brilliant. well played to get rid of rachel, maggy was for hundred times better then kate but i just got annoyed with the character and was pleased with her going. frankly, i feel like they should go a poison ivy/catwoman/two face route with two face running everything behind the scenes and keep the joker as an icon for the criminals of gotham. however, i have this desire to see ben kingsley (sp?) play mr. freeze. everything that heath ledger did was pure brilliance. he

Nolan has prooved it...

You can make a movie with up to three villans in it and still have it be a classic! an Epic Masterpiece. Nuff said.

I'm just sayin...

I didn't see the movie. I walked out after the Watchmen trailer. Kidding. TDK has both a little Frank Miller (Year One) and Alan Moore (The Killing Joke). The film was ruthless, like the Joker but, in a good way. It was like watching an intense 2 and a half hour trailer or a superhero version of Heat but, more satisfying. There were enuf dramatic elememts in TDK to make at least 5 good summer films and a couple of winter ones! As for the 3rd film, it has to have Catwoman and I want Rosario

Or they could introduce Robin with a Jim Starlin/The Cult-like storyline. Batman will be laying low in the 3rd installment, right?
P.S. Doesn't that Adam West/Batman pic look like the Mr. Skin logo?

Pretty incredible

Not the best ever film, but close enough to a be-all-to-end-all superhero film, as well as a superior action thriller. Heath Ledger leaves one powerful impression as the Joker, immersing himself every bit as much as in "Brokeback Mountain." Aaron Eckhart is not the most obvious choice to play such a beacon of hope as Harvey Dent, and his Two-Face is quite a sight to behold (while I didn't hate Katie Holmes as much as others, Maggie Gyllenhaal made a better fit for Eckhart than Holmes ever would

Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox is given more screen-time this go round, and Gary Oldman continues proving he can play good and noble with the best of them. Christian Bale and Michael Caine are two of the best talents in the business, and their onscreen relationship is only more rich. For people who thought "Batman Begins" was an epic superhero movie, this thing redefines that, and not always for the better. While I could handle the dark, oppressive tone of the film, my butt felt sore on the way out.

And I have to give props either to the sound guys or my fellow audience members, because with a packed theater, I can't think of a single complaint to be had from them once the film began.

Just sayin.. "fanboys" aren't the only ones praising the film. I have read at least 20 critic reviews that compare it to the best crime dramas of all time. If you didn't enjoy it as much as others, you shouldn't condemn them for their enthusiasm.

It came out on Wednesday in Australia and I've seen it twice already. I plan on going again(probably at IMAX). It's almost a flawless film. Whatever small tiny things are "wrong" in this film are totally overshadowed by the awesomeness of the rest.
The performances, the score (loved the jokers shrill 'psychotic' theme), the direction, the cinematography, the story, it's all fantastic.

Eckhart was very convincing as Harvey Two Face, during his performace I loved how he slowly brought on the coin gimmick which helped the characters growth. Alot of people compared him to Venom in Spidey 3 but to but what made him convincing is how he was built up unto the role instead of just becoming what he was supposed to then being ended in a short fight.

The suspense was wonderful, it made me wonder and worry what the hells gonna happen next but also i dont know if im the only one that noticed it when something suspenseful was going to happen they had some kind of loud pitched wail in the soundtrack. (that I could have done without).

As mentioned, I could see as future villains

Catwoman
The Riddler
Bane

I could also see young Batgirl eventually coming of age and taking up her mantle (Ive heard the Robin arguements)

Yeah...

The film was good, but Jesus, the majority of you people are taking it entirely too far. Best film ever? Hardly. Best film of the year? Not really.

A very good film, but this is just insanity. And, yeah, I'm sure every fanboy on here will crucify me for not shooting my load over this film.

Big deal; get over yourselves.

We should all pitch in a couple cents for Alexander("....enough already with the dark knight! Write about something else for a change.") to see the Dark Knight, so he can stop kidding himself. Also.. I wouldn't be too dissapointed if they ended it with such an amazing film. Claires right. But still.. if anyone can make another great one, its Nolan, Bale, and the rest of those awesome people.

Not a big deal but just curious. Did anyone else think Batman moved slow in every fight scene in this movie? Not saying it was bad at all just odd esp when he fought SWAT you would think him moving slow that one of them could at least shot at him the one guy from what I saw was just standing on the left of the screen watching Batman kick ass. The movie is still one of my favorites of all time, Aaron Eckhart for Captain America!

Brilliant Film

Saw it last night and was blown away by it. It was a thrilling story that not only worked as a superhero film but also as a pure crime drama. The opening bank heist sequence was fantastic. The acting all around was on the mark, especially Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. Ledger's performance of the Joker was both humorous and disturbing at the same time, he played it perfectly. He commanded every shot he was in. And Bale has grown as Batman and you can see how he behaves in the first part

He commanded every shot he was in. And Bale has grown as Batman and you can see how he behaves in the first part of the film (almost happy) till what he becomes by the end (a true dark figure, inside and out). I also liked the theme of scars that run through the movie, both physical and mental, that the 3 lead characters have and deal with as the movie progresses. The action sequences were outstanding and the story powerful, with great, strong characters - I especially enjoyed Gary Oldman in a larger, intense role.

If I had any thing against the film, is that I did feel the running time was a factor. The scene with the ferry boats was an interesting sequence but it took away from the main story line, and stopped the pacing of the action sequences that were going on. It felt a bit out of place. But this is a minor thing compared to the brilliance of the remainder of the film. The ending is an emotional punch that will stay with you for a long time (the lines between Gordon and his son at the end is truly powerful). Can't wait to see it again.

End it here.

I loved it, and there's probably nothing I can say that hasn't been said already... except that I hope this is the last Batman movie. Without the Joker, there can't be another Batman. The direction they're taking Batman requires the Joker... and that can't happen anymore. Nolan's Batman isn't episodic. The Joker and everything he's done can't be ignored in a third movie. These films don't follow a simple plot (man becomes villain, villain wreaks havoc, villain is defeated). Instead, they're

Instead, they're character studies, and as such, simply giving Batman a new vilain to fight won't work. Other than the Joker, I can't think of another villain that will work with where Batman (the character) is headed.

(spoiler-ish)

And it's quite obvious that Nolan intended the Joker to be in the third film....

Also, 'the third movie' never works - it's never up to par with first films.

I thought this was a Batman movie???

First off, TDK was Awesome. One of, if not, the best superhero movies ever made. The story, the acting, the action, all were top notch. Bale and Ledger were fantastic, but where's the love for Batman/Bale??? Very few people are talking about Bats. The action scenes he was in was far better than Begins. Bale played the characters of Batman and Wayne better than the first movie, though Batmans voice needs to be worked on just a little, but its no big deal.

Amazing!

First off, Halik -- Mr. Reese is not the name of the Riddler -- it's Edward Nigma and he would definitely be a weak villain in contrast to the Joker.

Amazing movie and I'm probably going to go see it again tonight. My bet's on Nolan to hang it up after this one -- he's a smart man and I'm sure he know he can't possible top this one. I'd love for him to come back but unfortunately I doubt its going to happen.

The Dark Knight is no doubt one of the greatest movies ever to be created. I felt that everything about the movie was absolutley perfect. I can't believe that this movie actually surpassed my already high expectations!!! It isnt just your typical super hero movie with action, comedy, and more action. It's a masterpiece on film.

I loved the movie!!! The Joker was bloody brilliant!!! The comments about the suit not being dog proof...but definitely "cat proof" is hopefully an indication of things to come :) The only thing I didn't like was sometimes it seemed like Bale's scary batman voice had a lisp to it...but maybe I was just hearing things. Overall a 10 out of 10!!!

3rd Villain and Dark Knight Masterpiece?

While the Dark Knight is now one of my favorite movies of all times and The Joker is probably the best movie villain I have seen in cinema the film was not a master piece. The movie needed to be edited to a shorter run time because it did drag on for a little to long. Bale's voice as Batman while understandable just gets to hard to understand when hes talking for a period of time. The only other complaint I have is the Two-Face death scene how does he die and Batman lives? Maybe I missed

WITH EVERYONES TALK ON A VILLAIN FOR THE 3RD

I don't really care having the police hunting down Batman on the run will make him a true vigilant and will be so much fun esp if Bruce has to go on the run or if he's on the clock cause of Mr.Reese finding his true identity. Mr.Reese= Mysteries=Riddler. Also maybe Two Face isn't dead I could see that and in a way this would have me more excited than I was for The Dark Knight. Not because of a amazing character like the Joker but because the story line would be so much fun.

But the only way to fully enjoy the Joker's twisted antics, Harvey Dent's tragic downfall, and Batman's transformation into the legendary Dark Knight, is to see it in on an IMAX screen. I cannot wait to watch it again.

I think Catwoman could be brought into Nolan's vision pretty easily, as a villian and love interest and still steer from Burton's vision. Ra's Aghoul could make a comeback as well if they can successfully involve the Lazarus Pit.

PRISONER WHO THREW THE DETONATOR

I'm still feeling a Bane Presence.

Clayface was an actor before his transformation. Can't make the prisoner connection. I can't see Killer Croc in Nolan's vision.

Rather than the Riddler. We could see the Mad Hater.

Good movie, but not great. Heath Ledger....outstanding performance! Harvey two-face dent, also great. The movie was a bit long, but not too bad. Now, what the hell is up with Batman's ridiculous new costume. Can't we just once get a black costume like batman should look all the time, instead of these cheesy mock-off jobs that look stupid. If this costume was in the comic books, the fans would be in an uproar. I understand the explanation of it all, but come on! The reviews on this movie were

The reviews on this movie were through the roof, and for the most part, they were right. And those stupid lights in batman's eyes toward the end of the movie....what is this, another george clooney batman!! It wasn't all bad, I guess I was just expecting more from a highly raved about movie.

Im not putting spoiler warnings in this (I guess I just did though) b/c this is for people WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT right? I mean sorry Joblo, but Its not cool t have an open discussion but leave out important plot points. So you have been warned.

Besides, if you are reading these comments, you shouldn't be. You should be watching the Dark Knight. If it's not playing right now, then wait until the earliest you possibly can go see it and go then. This movie is THAT good.

-Anyways for those of you saying that Two Face is dead and we don't have a villain for #3 well you could be mistaken. Dent may still be alive. Nolan could easily re work the Dark Knight Returns Dent story arch into his universe.

In that storyline, for those unfamiliar, Batman captures 2Face. At this point 2Face is in his prime and has developed a split personality. He is every bit as demented as Ledger's Joker. 2Face is a murderer and a cold blooded one at that.

He is locked away in Arkham for 12 years and Batman is now retired and has been for some time.

He is much older and crime of course is still soaring due to a new massive gang of mutants known as, well, The Mutant Gang.

Also a group of copycat vigilanties (just like we see in TDK) known as the Sons of Batman are trying to fight crime.

It has been so long since Batman was last seen that, to kids, batman is just a legend.

Well after twelve years Dent's doctors decide he is mentally cured of his mental diseases and they decide to release him. On top of that, Wayne has been not only paying for his treatment but also pays for reconstructive surgery to fix his face. (Dent and Wayne were always really good friends in the comics, something that TDK failed to establish)

It is a success and besides the loss of all of his hair, he looks pretty normal. He releases a statement that he hopes Gotham can forgive him for his crimes. However, Gordan does not believe he is better and he ends up being correct. Soon after Dent is released he dissapears and returns to his old crime family. This leads to Bruce deciding to bring Bats out of retirement to hunt down Dent.

Anyways, I can see some sort of variation of this playing in my head. Not the retired Bats or the older Wayne or anything, but I can see Dent in Arkham after they fake his funeral and make him out to be a Hero (like Bats wanted). Then I can see him breaking out with the help of a new villain or maybe even Joker or Scarecrow again or something.

I dunno. Just a thought. Its really the only thing I can see IF Dent is to come back, and maybe I am wrong and he isn't coming back, but I believe he will be. They didn't even scracth the surface with that character and he has such amazing storylines in the comics. I cant see his story being over. Maybe it is.

BEST FILM OF THE YEAR

I was going to go into an extremely in-depth review but I just noticed the request not to reveal any major spoilers so I'll keep those out of this.

Firstly, I'd just like to say that THE DARK KNIGHT, for me, is one of those rare films that don't happen nearly enough; where great acting, writing, directing, storytelling, [link] that makes a movie great, is all expertly woven into one fantastic cinematic experience.

Firstly, I'd just like to say that THE DARK KNIGHT, for me, is one of those rare films that don't happen nearly enough; where great acting, writing, directing, storytelling, [link] that makes a movie great, is all expertly woven into one fantastic cinematic experience.

Heath Ledger, as I'm sure everyone knows by now, was nothing short of amazing; giving a performance that truly blows you away. He totally disappeared into The Joker, he WAS...IS The Joker, plain and simple. He turned in the type of performance where you have to keep reminding yourself that it was Heath Ledger playing that part and, as a budding actor, I believe that to be what acting is all about. It saddens me even more regarding his unfortunate and premature passing, because I would have loved to see what more he could have done with his tremendous talent. Not only to expand The Joker performance in a third Batman, but in other films.

Aside from Ledger's Joker, the standout performance of the movie was Aaron Eckhart, specifically as Two-Face. Maybe it was because The Joker got so much attention during the marketing and anticipation of the movie that I was taken aback and pleasantly surprised by Eckharts Two-Face. I kept finding myself wanting to see more of him.

Maggie Gylenhaal was so much better as Rachel Dawes than Katie Holmes. I just wish she had been in the first one because, while her performance was good, it was hard to totally invest in her relationship with Bruce Wayne just because it felt like a different character. I'm going to be nitpicky here for a second and say that I would have preferred if Rachel Dawes had been written out entirely and they had stuck with Harvey Dent having a wife like in the comics. But again, I'm just being nitpicky.

Overall, this was a truly fantastic piece of cinema and will hopefully continue to help in proving that, when done right, superhero flicks can be just as great of films as something like THE GODFATHER.

Finally, I'd just like to say that I feel, and not just because he's passed, that Heath Ledger does deserve, at the very least, an Oscar nomination for his performance. I've felt this way ever since I first saw him in the trailer. From reading interviews and such regarding his preparation for The Joker, I can only imagine all the hard work he put in to deliver something that millions of people could appreciate and I feel he deserves to be rewarded for his efforts. Even still, if a nomination doesn't happen, at least he'll have all the praise for finally giving us The Joker we all deserved. Rest in peace, Heath.

TOO MUCH AWESOME!

I hate to say it since I am a huge Iron Man fan, but this movie tops it all. There was not one part that I found flawed and there were more then just one main actor in this film. For a batman film I didn't even find him to be the main actor in it all, but shocked at what we saw from Harvey Dent. The joker was the best acting I ever saw and must have an Oscar. I hope for another Batman in the near future.

poor plot...

This movie was massively ambitious, for which it gets an old "A for effort", but it fails to deliver. I really enjoyed Ledger, and even a lot of the ideas it kept introducing, like someone finally bringing up the batmobile coming from Wayne Enterprises, only to have interesting ideas like that lost in dumb and over the top chaos. It fed me too much garbage to believe in anything that was going on. Joker is clearly the most clever person... ever!!! That over-explained ending was awful... I get

I get it dude, it was explained once, by Batman, no need to recap it!!! And the score, hardly lets up... felt like being stuck in traffic while the guy behind you keeps honking. Most scenes demand credit for their payoffs without earning it. Little cheering in a packed theater, lots of yawns, and most people, as if programmed, stating they liked it "joker was cool". Nice... enjoy guys! Anyway, not the point... I can pick moments that I truely love in this thing, but they're nestled in a steaming pile of expensive sh_t.

I knew it would do well, but biggest opening day ever? Congrats Nolan and co., you deserve it.

Do you think the majority of people during the Great Depression spent what little money they had to see their poverty reflected on screen? No, 80 million theater-goers per week wanted to be entertained. And as we slip further into recession, the American people want the same thing.

Plain and simple...

As cliche as it may sound. The Dark Knight is truely a masterpiece in every sense of the word. The movie flows seamlessly, as there's rarely a flawed moment in it. Nearly every cast member delivers an "A" caliber performance.

If there is one draw back to the film. It would be Maggie Gyllenhaal's uninspired turn as Rachel Dawes, but that one set back is more than made up for by Heath Ledgers mesmerizing performance as the Joker.

If there truely is one movie you need to see this summer. It

The Most Amazing Movie Experience

I saw the movie at the midnight premiere and instead of giving you all a review, I'm going to share a moment that occurred while watching the film:

After the bank heist finished and Heath Ledger pulled off his mask, no one in the audience said a thing. We actually stood up and applauded. I've never had that happen before in a movie.

Truly one of the best films ever.

Sucks ass, comic books will never translate to art.

With all the people dying in Iraq we have to find our horror channeled through a guy in a batsuit fighting a clown? time for Suburbian White youth to ditch their peterpan complexes and grow up.

Movie was a 2.5/4 stars, decent, but not great, most overhyped thing since Gta IV

This movie was like everyone has said, "AMAZING". This is the Batman movie fanboys have been waiting for, it had everything you wanted. Ledger was great as the Joker, I still can't believe it was him playing the role.
By the way Rasporange Pant, you need to believe that Two-Face could walk around with that much facial damage, because he was so far gone mentally that the physical damage he suffered was the last thing on his mind. Plus there is the little known fact that it was a "MOVIE"! Also

As campy and corny as it sounds, this is one of the very best movies I've ever seen. By far the best film of the year. This is not a Batman movie. This is THE Batman movie told in a striking cinematic experience.

One advantage that The Dark Knight has is major characters are all laid down and ready to go from Batman Begins. So when The Dark Knight starts, it doesn't Stop!! Really. The whole running time is about 2 and a half hour but you WON'T feel bore at all. Everything keeps on going at good pace and everything pays off. This isn't your average superhero sequel. Nolan has to do lots of homework for the next Batman (I assume he'd still be the director) because he has set the bar very very high with

I liked it a lot. I just thought Maggie Gyllenhaal was so much more annoying than Katie Holmes was and Two-Face's face was so dumb. For a movie that is supposed to be uber-realistic, I find it hard to believe he could sustain that much damage without undergoing any treatment or anything and just walk around like normal. He would have died from infections and his eye would not be moist or still in his head. They took that way too far.

Pump the brakes.

I thought it was good. I liked it.

I liked Ledger's performance a lot. We all really need to slow on the Oscar talk, though -- it was good and fun but... come on. It was a very memorable portrayal and easily the most noteworthy thing in this movie but that's about as far as it goes.

I generally only "liked" (not loved) all the other performances, to be honest. I wanted more of Bale (more on this below) and Freeman, though.

I really liked the photography, color, and production design.

I really liked the photography, color, and production design. People kept making the HEAT comparison and it really was evident in the film's aesthetics; it was very Michael Mann-ish. I also liked the very pale and cool blue/green color pallet and how it contrasted to the warm orange threatening look of BEGINS.

I did generally like the story's overall trajectory. Expansive and unpredictable; they made it complex but not to the point where it was to the movie's detriment (which is surprisingly difficult to do, it seems). But I did have some questions about the length as it relates to the necessity of several elements (more below).

I didn’t understand many of the “Nolan can’t shoot action” complaints. There were one or two moments in a few scenes where I had no idea what was going on but it passed quickly. That was not an issue, for me -- if you could roll with the latter two BOURNE movies or, really, any action movie from the last five years, you can keep up with DARK KNIGHT.

I don’t care about the little things that seemingly bother so many people (the Batman voice, the suit, whatever). I love the scenes where Lucius just explains Bruce's new suit, where Bruce merely interacts with someone without punching them, etc. Those sort of moments are what make this "Nolanverse" fascinating to me, that he grounds the larger-than-life in our world... and I wanted more reminders of it.

I don’t know about all the “masterpiece”, “Best of the year”, “best comic book movie ever”, Oscar talk. The pace seemed too hectic, to me. I’m down with fast-moving flicks but this one seemed like, at some point, they realized that they had two movies’ worth of story and, if they didn’t want to cut out a ton, they had to make it move really fast for 150 minutes and there are points where moments from earlier in the story seemed to have no [link] consequence(s). BEGINS was flawed to me because the third act felt extremely tacked-on because the movie needed a standard conclusion (it was well-executed just seemed like it wasn't part of the first 2/3rds of the movie) and in DARK KNIGHT, I felt like there was a point in this movie where it could've ended and a third movie could have really fleshed out some parts that I felt were sold short.

Along that line of thinking, there were parts of the movie that just seemed like they were written to make the movie fuller and more movie-ish and though these moments were not awful, they just were quite simply not that good (especially when placed alongside some of the more phenomenal scenes).

I thought the writing was really hit and miss. One notable example was when (avoiding spoilers) something big happened and Gordon pulls this huge clunky monologue out of his back pocket (not the final voiceover -- the monologue prior to that, that he shares with Batman)... what? Were you just saving that? Everyone kept cranking out these long philosophical Confucius-like thoughts about heroes and whatever and at some point, I started to become unimpressed by these incredibly verbose life lessons and wanted them to start saying things that they would really be saying and that were realistically applicable to the goings on.

A lot of the logistical steps in the story were just a little too convenient and constructed yet still illogical. I won't go into great detail, so as to preserve the spoiler stuff but I'll just say: the cell phone thing and its implementation as the story went along, for one, was just bizarre and seemed out of place (not the relative concept but the execution). Really, a majority of the Joker's actions and handiwork were a little ridiculous, in just how someone could possibly arrange things that far in advance. Occasional things like that in a flick that is purporting to be realistic are okay (and can be overlooked) but in this movie, there were things happening every 8 seconds where you're thinking "wait... how and why was that already in place?". There's a line between "supremely expert planning" and "this is going to happen on the screen because we need it to happen and the audience won't think about it".

There was one big character "fake-out" (again, I won't spoil it but those of you who have seen the film know what I'm talking about) that was just strange, I thought -- and the particulars of it seemed very out of character for that character.

I also kept waiting for Bruce/Batman to appear long enough to deal with something and learn/grow, as a character. But he didn’t. Not at all. Gordon is developed more than the main character — what was that about? Bruce briefly mentions stuff like “I can soon stop being Batman because Dent’s a good man” to Rachel but he never really speaks to anyone about what’s happening with the Joker, Dent, the city, etc. at length. It was just the handful of lines about “what would you have me do?” and those quick one-off trailer lines before he goes out and does whatever. I wanted more scenes like the conversation between Joker/Dent in the hospital room… but I wanted them to involve Bruce/Batman reasonably talking with someone. For a Batman movie, there sure was a dearth of Bruce/Batman characterization.

I thought Dent's turn was way underdeveloped. It's like, Event A happens and Dent's character just completely transforms in a matter of hours/days. I wanted to know WHY beyond the superficial explanations thrown out in quick dialogue quips.

I just thought there were big gaps in this movie's depth. Not hugely detracting or anything (again: I liked it! I thought it was good, both as a comic book film and a film in general!) but it was those lulls in excellence and occasional shallow points that keep me from anointing this movie as whatever historical crowning achievement everyone else is proclaiming.

It's "very good" at some points, "good" at other points, and "average" at other points. My friend described it pretty well: it did not exceed expectations and if you read a lot of the early reviews, it did not meet the expectations, either. But it definitely met the expectations based on the trailers -- it was everything the trailers led you to believe it would be; it was the really hyperbolic reviews (both by critics and people who just saw screenings) that drove some people to feel obligated to christen it something more than it was. This movie was the logical follow-up to BEGINS; neither movie is perfect (each probably gets/will get a little too much love) but DARK KNIGHT is closer to that mark of being a classic movie.

PERFECT

the acting, action, music, cinematography, story, sets, special effects, oh my god. what a fucking kick ass movie. this was the best movie i have seen in the new millenium. what an achievement. combining the comic book and reality aspects make this movie stand alone and nothing stands near it. it was beautiful. i watched all the scenes and trailers before i watched it. and it was a good thing. i didnt even think about the first time i saw the scene playing. it just drew me in and never let go.

Spiderman 2 was my favorite superhero movie before this. but The Dark Knight not only knocks that off but all movies in general. it explains why we need heroes, and what they stand for. The Dark Knight should be the next blockbuster film to recieve an oscar since TITANIC. i think it earns it and it shows, perfectly. if you havent watched this movie yet, stop reading, and just fucking go.
TDK gets an easy
10/10
bravo.

wow!!!

Aaron Ekhart and Heath Leadger are the shizzle! they both rocked as Two-Face and Joker, Heath's performance was an absolute WORK OF ART! the guy is a master at playing The Joker! I admit it...this film is by far the best BATMAN/Superhero movie ever! I love'd it! it's gripping from the very start to the end, I'll probably see it again but whoever hasn't you have to go see it!! The Dark Knight is a MASTERPIECE!!!

I don't believe my words justify my feeling.

Viewing the Dark Knight was an experience not that much unlike losing my virginity... In high school. My eyes were wide. I wanted each second to last a minute more only to realize forever was and ending to soon.

I must take my hat off to Christopher Nolan and the entire cast and crew. Everything was top notch. There were moments when I was amazed that THIS hadn't been done before.

Eckhart Played Harvey Two-Face on the dime. Oldman brought even more life in to a wonderfully established character. Bale showed a depth in his acting ability most working actors should be jealous of. And Ledger. Ledger... He has not only defined the Joker but has also set a new benchmark among villains in any genre. The ensemble performance was superb.

Whatever force was behind The Dark Knight that made it so damn near perfect should teach the rest of Hollywood how it's done.

Many Oscar nominations are in order for this fine gem.

TDK

I thought it was awesome!
The joker was the best. I loved every scene with him in it. He was scary and funny at times.
It was pretty much flawless. The only things i didnt like was it seemed a bit too long & for some reason i didnt like batmans voice when he spoke.
Great movie, Go see it :)

Rollercoaster ride..

I can't imagine the amount of work and preparation that must have gone into this picture.

Anyway, it's stunning. I saw the 12:00 AM show here last night and my mind is still reeling. Heath OWNS the Joker, they might as well not even try to replace him.

I like how the supporting characters had a much bigger role, including Caine, Freeman and Oldman, and they're all great (props to Maggie G. as well--they should've just cast her to begin with in 'Begins').

This film juggles so many

This film juggles so many subplots & so many characters but it never derails quite like "Spiderman 3" did so spectacularly (which I still hold up as a good superhero film). Much thanks are in order to Nolan and his brother Jonathan for such an awesome script. The care and attention to detail put in this film is awesome. It's just so good though that I don't know where they can go next, and I too, being the greedy bastard that I am,

******SPOILER**********

was surprised they didn't tease a villain for the next film.

Anyway, fucking great movie. I don't think too many will be disappointed.

Stunningly awesome in every possible way. And that's an understatement.

To answer DerekL1: I think Joker would've had a somewhat big role, although given Ledger's performance, he would've outshone any other new villain. I'd like to see Johnny Depp take on the Joker role, IF they were to recast him.

SPOILERS

I just got back and it was incredible, so much happened. I don't have any idea what they'll do with joker now that he's alive (and scarecrow is still alive)...Joker should have pulled out a knife and cut the rope at the end and laughed all the way down. And I have no idea what's up with Two-face, or batman for that matter. They need the next one out asap.

Amazing

I loved this movie it was one of the very few movies, especially over the past few years, that actually lives up to the hype. Of course I gotta say Heath Ledger was awesome as the joker (blew Jack out of the water and hes one of my all time favs) but I think a person who is getting over looked is Aaron Eckhart who I thought was fantastic and Christan Bale gave probably his best performance if not one of the best of his career. The best comic book movie ever made and one the best movies ever. I

Excellent! Great movie making!!

In my opinion, The Dark Knight is not really a superhero movie. It's an action movie that has a superhero character.

It was definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen, but without sounding naive.. I wish they would have teased us about the villain for the next movie.

Also,

I was very surprised they killed Harvey before the 3rd film. Now the internets has to be a warzone on finding out who will be the next villain. :(

Finally....

a movie this summer that truly delivered. This is like "what if Michael Mann directed a comic book movie?" And what we get is certainly worth the 3 year wait.
I agree with Jaybro7 about certain issues of building the Harvey Dent/Batman relationship. The animated series had that story the best. Overall, though, Nolan establishes enough and for a 2 and half hour film, it didn't feel like it. I'm curious if they'll have the three hour cut on DVD...

The only downside to The Dark Knight is that it will be impossible to make a better movie for the third one. And not just because Ledger is gone, it's because this is the perfect Batman story.

EPIC

Well. I was expecting this movie to be monumental and it was. Even after all the spoilery scenes I watched there was still a TON of content to be seen. What can I say about the performances.

Bale - He is definitely my favorite interpretation of the character. However, I feel as though his performance was better in Begins than in The Dark Knight. He is good in TDK, yes, but for whatever reason he seemed more monumental in Begins, maybe because Begins was Bruce Wayne's story and in this one,

He is good in TDK, yes, but for whatever reason he seemed more monumental in Begins, maybe because Begins was Bruce Wayne's story and in this one, it really isn't just about him. Also, the character has more to do in the film and more happens to him, and like they say, actions speak louder than words.

Aaron Eckhart - TDK is Dent's story. and Eckhart absolutely NAILED Harvey Dent. By the end of the movie you really feel bad for the guy and Eckhart displays all the emotion with ease and skill.

Heath Ledger - What can I say. THIS is the reason to see this movie. Ledger is FLAWLESS. Everything about his performance IS the Joker. The way he changes his voice from time to time, the different laughs and giggles that he does at the perfect time, his constant tonging(sp?) of his scars, the crazy looks and expressions, his mannerisms. Everything he does in this Film is EPIC. It makes Ledgers death that much more tragic and if he doesn't WIN the Oscar for best performance, than I SWEAR TO GOD I am boycotting the academy.

Now, for the one thing I wasn't sold on:

Rachel/Bruce/Harvey triangle. Sorry, folks, but this was weak to me. Even at 2.5 hours, I STILL wasn't sold on these three and their relationships with each other. Harvey and Rachel were already datng when the movie started, but they really didn't have that many scenes together. How long have they been dating? If he came in right after Begins than that means about 7 months. Sorry but I don't think thats long enough to fall in love with someone and they were supposed to be in love and I just didn't see it.

Also Dent and Waynes relationship. There wasn't one! Sure Wayne and Bats respects Dent, but are they friends? No not really. To me if they had been better friends (like the Animated Series and also in the comics) than his transformation into 2face would've been more meaningful and tragic to him.

I wish, that Dent would've been introduced in Batman Begins but as Harvey Dent, no 2face. That way, him and rachel couldve started their relationship a little sooner and also Bruce and Dent could become better friends leading up to the tragedy in TDK.

-The Bat Pod. Why did they make it part of the Tumbler? Why was it an "injector seat" for the tumbler? It didn't bother me, but it just sort of struck me as "Odd". I never understood the name of the Bat pod, but now I do. It is a neat concept, but that scene to me looked a bit odd in the sense that I couldn't really tell how the hell the Bat pod was incorporated into the tumbler. It just struck me by surprise and also was a little strange to me. Thats it.

Well just my two cents. I absolutely love this movie. The Joker is EPIC and everything he does is Epic. All of the games he plays are genius, sadistic, morbid, insane and just downright cruel. His reasons for them are justified in his own sick world and he is a Villain that actually has ideas and beliefs and actually follows through with them. He isn't just some hell bent guy trying to take over the city. Shit, he doesn't even want money! This movie is By FAR the best one this year and is also the best movie based on a comic that has ever been made. Better than Superman: The Movie, better than Spiderman 2 and it is better than Iron Man, even though TDK to me, is DC's Iron Man.

I agree, the Dark Knight achieves a new status BUT that is partly because Batman doesn'tm have "super" powers so you can create a realistic world. For as great as [link] are, (follow me with this phrase slowly) - they have limitations because there powers are limitless - thus having to create crazier and very unrealistic characters. You can't do that with most other comics.

Cudos for the performances, as good as everyone is ledger does manage to steal the show, and its sad because I could watch just a JOKER movie about him. I plan on seeing it in IMAX, and I hope this movie beats Titanic, repeat viewers will make this happen.

I'm speechless, really. The Dark Knight has set a league of its own and none of the other comic adaptations that came before are even in it. It's uber-realistic and disturbing at the same time, allowing us to dwell into the mind and soul of Gotham's guardian and realizing that it isn't fun at all...more like a burden to be Batman. Heath Ledger's performance was incredible and I keep wishing that the tragedy had never happened. It's still hard to digest. I'm watching this a dozen times over, and

Monumental. This movie has it all. There's nothing I can say that will do it justice, really. Every character, symbol, idea, theme, etc. comes together and creates an incredible film.
The depth and complexity of the three main characters (Wayne, Joker, Dent) is what drives this film, and my god did it have me sucked in. I could identify with each of them and everything worked very well together.

But, I must say, Heath Ledger as the Joker takes the cake. The character of the Joker belongs to Heath. As fun as Jack Nicholson or Mark Hamill's interpretations of the Joker were, Heath really portrayed the most interesting and complicated version. And he took it with him to his grave.
RIP

Can't wait to see this again. It's going to be hard finding a movie that will top the Dark Knight for me.

Stuck in my head

This movie was amazing, i cant stop thinking about Heath Ledger's performance, its so awful that he died, i had no idea he was such a good actor, he definately deserves an oscar for this because he really became that character. i couldnt care less about watchmen right now because of this movie.
