The Prometheus story will continue in comic book form. Is the film sequel doomed?

Jul. 3, 2013by: Alex Maidy

After almost a year since it hit theaters and divided audiences, Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS is getting a sequel. But, it doesn't look like it will be a theatrical one. Mike Richardson, publisher of Dark Horse Entertainment, told The Hollywood Reporter the following:

"We're brewing something up that I think the fans of Ridley Scott's amazing film will really like,"

Dark Horse has long published ALIEN comic titles and as we all know, PROMETHEUS ties into the universe originated in that Ridley Scott film. Scott has been working with 20th Century Fox to try and find writers to realize a sequel to the open-ended PROMETHEUS, but word of difficulty behind the scenes may have led to the story being continued on the written page.

This by no means removes any chance of a PROMETHEUS film sequel, but I would say it definitely lowers the likelihood of it. The film did gross $400 million worldwide so a sequel would be a good business decision, but creatively there may not be as positive of a reception due to the lackluster reaction from many fans and critics to the movie.

Personally, I loved PROMETHEUS, warts and all, and would love seeing a sequel but if Ridley Scott is not on board, I would be wary.

say wut sucka.....

Comic BOOK??? Great but who gives a shite??? I want that sequel we were all promised at the end of the film....and a comic book just doesn't cut it. I want to see why this GIANT was so damn violent if he's supposed to be "evolved" or whatever and so so many other questions answered or at least tried to. but not in comic book variety...I mean that too is nice but I really don't read comic books anymore...no matter how sophisticated. IDK maybe i'd give it a look if that is all we had to go on but

IDK maybe i'd give it a look if that is all we had to go on but lets be honest here....its just not as satisfying...now if it was originally a comic then that be a no brainer but we were introduced to this world in movie form and that's how it should conclude. I thought the film was really good no matter what the critics have to say. Critics today are just way too difficult to impress and that is becoming somewhat of a fad among them....and we all know EVERYONES A CRITIC

I sure hope the sequel happens sooner or later. Prometheus Rules. It's certainly far superior to the fourth Aliens sequel.

This sounds like a good idea. I'd definitely check it out if only to see how this pseudo-Alien universe could be expanded. But I don't think the release of the comic would necessary have any impact on whether or not a sequel gets greenlit. There's not enough evidence to prove that one impacts the other. Actually, perhaps the fact they are making a comic book based on Prometheus means they are making some headway on getting a sequel greenlit and into production.

As long as it includes justifiably scared characters who suddenly and inexplicably switch gears and treat a snake-like alien life form like it's a puppy.

I loved the film and would love to see a sequel. Most people hate on it because it wasn't what they were expecting. They wanted another alien film and got a different type of scifi movie

I dislike it because it had inconsistent, unlikable characters, plot holes galore....and basically a screenplay that needed a few more rewrites. It did look good visually, though.

Sorry to disagree

I don't think you could have been further from the truth. Sorry. It only makes sense that Dark Horse who has been publishing Alien comics for DECADES would fold the Prometheus storyline into their comics as well. I mean - how many years went by between Alien films and Dark Horse continued to produce comics based on them - despite the doomsayers decreeing that Alien3 / Resurrection / AVP / AVP2 would be the last film in the franchise. So NO - it isn't an indication that the film series is dead. Not even close.

Sorry, Alex, but I have to agree with some of the folk below. Mike's comments don't even remotely imply that this comic could be an alternative to a live-action sequel. In fact, it doesn't imply anything at all. I have no issue at all with opinion-based articles (in fact I'm all for it), but saying this lowers the possibility of a sequel isn't really *ehem* accurate.

That aside, I loved Prometheus and would love to see a sequel.

It's a trend for films to have "comic book prequels" to whet the appetite and set up the story somewhat. Man of Steel and Pacific Rim are two recent examples. A comic book follow-up to Prometheus and an actual film sequel are not mutually exclusive.

Yeah, the assumptions in this article kinda suck.

Not to mention that Prometheus hardly was met with apathy by reviewers. It has 74% on RottenTomatoes with a 7/10 average. Some critics like Roger Ebert gave it full-star reviews. The vocal minority on the Internet - the Alien geeks - have swayed public perception of the film, much in the same way Indiana Jones 4 is perceived as an abysmal failure despite the fact that general audiences seemed to have no problem with it (76% on RT, highest-grossing film of the franchise). To be fair, I fucking

To be fair, I fucking HATED Indy 4, but the truth is, sometimes fanboys on the Internet use their venue to almost rewrite history in terms of how films are perceived. Prometheus was only a huge disappointment to the people who were expecting Alien. Most people who went to go see it were probably relatively fine with it - it's not a great flick but it's a pretty solid sci-fi flick if only on a visceral, visual level. The reason Fox could hesitate with moving forward at this point is that it wasn't *enough* of a huge cultural smash for there to be a built-in audience for the sequel, and a lot of the 'event' marketing surrounding Prometheus built up the mystery that won't quite be contained in a follow-up film. Plus, since it did piss off Alien fanboys, they have a couple elements to overcome in marketing the next film. That's probably why they're taking their time developing a sequel - making sure the story is in place so they can do a good job selling it to general audiences and re-affirming faith in fanboys.

That's one problem with the internet: the angry, negative minority are always the loudest and most heard which results in their cries being considered consensus.

*sigh* Yet another Alex Maidy "article" that is mere rumour and speculation. You're a terrible reporter, Alex. I would advise you to stick to your day job at Paylocity.

What an outrageous title, Maidy. This site itself reported on the sequels progress very recently now that they've officially found a writer. [link]

I loved Prometheus (flaws and all) and hope we get a sequel soon because the ending left so many questions still yet to be answered. I would hate to see it become another "one and done" film. I would like to have some closure to the two remaining characters in Prometheus and see how much more the story ties into the Alien franchise.

Hope they do get a sequel going. Loved prometheus and my problem mainly was simply fixed logic problems and no solid explanation of what the black goo was other than "death." With everyone but shaw and david dead they could do any story they wanted.

Prometheous 2

we didnt really need Prometheus part one did we? instead of taking us to the Alien Home world, they have been ducking that vision for centuries...that... and show us a futuristic earth in the Alien universe... never did that either... pisses me off... Take us to the alien Home-world already... I dont care about the Founders or builders or Engineers or whatever... those guys simply do not interest me... (plus they're dead anyway) why is it that we always get a movie where the alien has been dead

There will be a Prometheus 2. These are personal opinions as wrong as they may be.

"Always look on the bright side of life. . . . ."

A person can be hip to this news about the comic book. One, a Prometheus fan can get the comic book sooner than the movie sequel. It takes a shorter time to produce. Two, the comic book needs not be canon. Therefore, Fox can produce a sequel whenever the studio is ready. The sequel need not follow the comic. The '80s Star Wars movies and comics went in different directions. Three, I like both comics and movies. They are both outstanding ways to experience a sci-fi tale. Four, Dark Horse

Four, Dark Horse deserves a book that makes the company more competitive again with Marvel, DC, Image, et. al. A Prometheus comic could be it. Five, as noted, Dark Horse did great work with the Aliens franchise, and the company produced an Aliens vs. Predators comic that was superior to the subsequent films. Six, "always look on the bright side of life."

If there's another movie, I hope it disregards Prometheus, and honors the established details from Alien more closely.
