Theater vs. newspaper

Sep. 10, 2009by: Dave Davis

In the days of endless websites, tweets, widgets and iPhone apps, the further dismissal of newspapers shouldn't be a shock. You are, after all, reading about it online.

Major theater chains Regal and AMC are looking for new ways to cut costs, and the old-school ink and parchment method of listing movie showtimes is taking the loss.

Paper publishers now have to smell the HTML -- Regal claims that 60-80% of people surveyed got their movie times online. Both theater businesses are now eliminating newspaper ads and directing patrons to their own sites, third-party portals like Fandango and Moviefone, or networking sites like Facebook.

Extra Tidbit: Do people still just go to a theater and see whatever movie is playing around the time they arrive?

I was wondering why my theater stopped showing their shows on the newspaper. Unlike most, I get my showtimes on the newspaper, even though I spend most of the time online. It's weird because I support the cutting back of resources to improve the environment.

TIDBIT

I don't know for myself, but often I hear other people wandering around posters outside asking each other what they think of this or that movie, if they wanna check it out or not.

I can't remember the last time I even heard someone mention using a newspaper to find movie times. I don't think many people will even notice. As for the extra tidbit, I haven't done that since college (almost 10 years ago for me). It's hard enough taking time to go see the movies I want with two kids, so simply going to see what's playing isn't really an option.

What the hell is a newspaper? I just say, "iPhone, find me a movie!" and it responds "I have 30 apps for that." Seriously, I haven't read a paper in 5+ years. Not exaggerating. It's yesterdays news.

That's my primary source for movie times - newspaper 1st then computer.

As per the other answers to the extra tidbit: The only time was last summer when I saw Bottle Shock - after it was suggested by the cashier - all in all a good experience

I do check my movie times online but, like Shaggy89, sometimes the only reason I pick up a newspaper is for the movie stuff.

Extra Tidbit: I haven't done that in years but I have some free time this semester....so I might just go ahead and do that sometime in the near future.

This is kind of sad news to me because it's just so natural to see the movie showtimes on that one lone page. Sometimes it's the only reason I even pick up a paper.

But on the extra tidbit I did that last week..for the first time in like 10 years.
