Warner Bros. and Legendary will end their eight-year partnership and bad news for Pacific Rim

06.25.2013by:

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures

Variety has learned that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will part ways at the end of their current contract that was originally signed in 2005. It's been a very profitable arrangement for both companies (during that time their films such as Christopher Nolan's Batman series, THE HANGOVER trilogy, INCEPTION, WATCHMEN, THE TOWN and DUE DATE have grossed over $8 billion worldwide) but in the end both sides decided it was time to move on. Three other studios have already shown interest in Legendary (Universal, Fox and Sony) and sources say the film production company hopes to have a deal in place by July 4th.

It's probably best for both sides since Legendary wants to build a larger company that doesn't just cover film but also television, online entertainment and comic books. Although the two companies partnered up for MAN OF STEEL, Warner Bros. wants to take a more "hands on" approach with their DC properties and treat them like the HARRY POTTER franchise. That would mean fully funding these films and that also means more money in Warner Bros' pockets if the film is a big hit.

Another item featured in the report is some pretty terrifying news about the next film from the companies. Early tracking for Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM isn't looking too hot and enthusiasm for the film isn't nearly as high as you'd think it would be. In fact GROWN UPS 2 opens the same weekend and audiences are expressing more interested in seeing that film than PACIFIC RIM. Let me repeat that: most people apparently would rather see GROWN UPS 2 than PACIFIC RIM.

Obviously this isn't a good sign for PACIFIC RIM, a film with a budget around $200 million. The low tracking for the film probably explains the most recent media blitz for PACIFIC RIM including this latest trailer. Hopefully if the movie doesn't do too well opening weekend some good word of mouth will give the film legs but if Guillermo Del Toro is serious about wanting to do a sequel the first film needs to make some serious cash.

PACIFIC RIM with Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day is in theaters July 12th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: If PACIFIC RIM bombs do you think it could completely kill Del Toro's chances of making AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS?

Go, Pacific RIm, go!

I hope Mr.Del toro isn't shaping up to become the next Terry Gilliam, an immensely talented filmmaker who just seems to have all the worst luck in projects and on the business side of things. The comparisons being made between Pacific Rim, an original concept that looks epic in scope and execution and Battleship, a film poorly conceived from a freakin' board-game for crying out loud, are nothing short of ridiculous. I want Mr.Del toro to know (even thought he'll never see this) that I'm not

I can't wait for Pacific Rim, but I can see how it could possibly fail it is a niche market, however if you think it looks like Transformers, Real Steel, Battleship etc, you really don't know what you are talking about it looks nothing like them.

Sorry but Pacific Rim looks too much like Transformers & maybe even Reel Steel. It doesn't even have any big major stars (I do like Charlie Hunnam though from Sons of Anarchy) & I doubt Del Toro has the fan base to make it a hit. Face it Adam Sandler is a huge star & has the fan base, you have to face the facts.

WB needs a lesson in modern marketing basically. If Pacific Rim bombs, it's their fault, and if I was Tel Toro I'd be absolutely pissed at them, and ripping them a new one at meetings.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to be there for Pacific Rim opening day. But it's going to be one of those movies that greatly appeal to the fanboy crowd, but will end up getting scoffed by the general public i.e. Cowboys and Aliens, Scott Pilgrim, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I've shown the trailers to a few co-workers, and they said that it looked stupid and juvenile.

All we can do push Pacific Rim on our friends, via Facebook, or whatever , go see it, & hope for the best.

Also, you gotta think a lot of those excited for Grownups 2 won't make it to opening weekend. Ingested paint chips, Meth, Sleeping w lit cigarettes, Etc....

LMAO right. because if you are excited to see possibly one of the worst movies ever made, and believe me theirs so much more shit out there. Uwe boll films, but holy crap if you want to spend money on seeing that well I feel terrible for you. I wouldn't see grown up's 2 if you paid me to see it I would only see it if I got paid 400 mill and even that isn't enough to sit through a juvenile movie, and anybody bitchin about Pacific rim being juvenile must of been dropped on their heads as kids.

There's something really wrong with the Warner Bros marketing machine outside the United States(At the opening week Man of Steel had only 70 millions outside the states on box office receptions) . I've seen on this site like 4 Man of Steel trailers and in my country, the only MOS trailer that played before the premiere was the second trailer, that was kind of underwhelming. We are like 3 weeks away from Pacific Rim and there is not even one fucking trailer of this movie playing in South America

I remember that the latest Iron Man 3 trailer played every freakin day of the week like a month or two before the opening. And people just noticed that there was a new Superman movie like two weeks before the premiere. Fuck Warner Bros marketing shit!

I wish the best for Pacific Rim, meaning I am going to definitely see it more than once. Fuck Grown Ups. It's just a group of friends hanging out. I can do that myself. I'm not going to pay money to watch people hang out. Too bad Legendary is parting ways. Hopefully, some good shit comes both WB and Legendary in the future that won't make them regret parting ways.

By the time it's released, it'll be almost a month since the last big sci-fi action flick (MoS), so i think the general audience will be hyped for Pac Rim by then.

The movie will surely be good, since Guillermo hasn't made a bad movie

But the studio is doing a piss poor job of marketing this behemoth. I hope the movie is great but that a sequal is quashed in the Legendary shake-up. Legendary can then setup shop at Universal and hopefully we will get the criminally long-awaited conclusion to Hellboy. Guillermo needs to focus himself on more intimate projects like Hellboy III and stay away from studio tent-poles with giant robot suits. If he even wants to make another Hellboy...

Not Surprising

I'm not really sure why people are surprised that Pacific Rim is trending poorly. The movie title itself is a poor choice, it makes it sound like this is either a WWII movie or perhaps a volcano disaster movie, the poor images that have been released make me think of Battleship and Transformers combined into one, and the average film goer doesn't have a clue who Guillermo Del Toro is.

Pacific Rim looks like a Transformers movies, which is a bad thing

People on this site have to realize that because you want to see it it doesn't mean everybody wants to. Movies like Dredd, Pacific Rim and Hot Fuzz get slurped a lot on this site but that doesn't mean anything. Personally, I love JoBlo, but I am rarely interested in the movies that the site or its fans keep pushing, like Pacific Rim, and more excited for movies that look good go me like The Wolf of Wall Street and The Conselour. That also applies to movies people here somehow dismiss before

Couldn't agree more with entire comment. I've felt from Day 1 that Pacific Rim looked like a [link] hybrid with little new to offer. BUT it has Del Toro's name so that makes it a must see?! All the praise for Del Toro is overrated IMO, never understood all the love for him. But to each his own.

Well said. I don't dislike Del Toro, but nothing he does is a must see for me either. Much, much more interested the two flicks you named. JoBlo is a good site, better than any of the other film sites I've visited in terms of a community, but if you're on an Internet film site odds are you will be dealing with the rabid fanboys for the most part.

COuld not agree more with this post, wish I could give you 100 thumbs up. I love this site also but it's the fans of it that like rant & rave about certain movies & judge someone who doesn't like what they do like. Many movies are praised here that I thought were very mediocre like Dredd, Warrior, Drive. Does i t mean I don't know movies? Heck no. I am 35 years old & understand people should have different opinions & not try to look cool on the internet for having to like certain movies.

Had this been Evangelion, it would be an event. Sad Del Toro didn't realize it in favor of calling it his idea.

Apparently that should have casted a bunch of past their prime comedians who just make fart noises with their mouth for Pacific Rim and it would be a $200 million hit.

I've been hearing (and saying) for years that you can't tell WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON in these movies and people are sick of it- they (and I) have checked out already. I couldn't identify a fucking thing in the trailers- it just looks like flashing, crashing visual noise. I'm old.

My guess is they did their poll online. That's their problem right there, folks online are not the general audience. On top of that, when presented with two titles in a poll: Pacific Rim and Grown Ups, people aren't going to be as familiar with PR as much as the already established Grown Ups. So of course they're going to pick something they've heard of before. But I guaranteed once the week comes, Grown Ups 2 will not make more than Pacific Rim. The general audience wants to see big explosions

Semi interested

I am pretty neutral on Pacific Rim. The only thing that interests me is Del Toro directing. The trailers look underwhelming. I can see how non movie geek fans won't be interested based on Del Toros name alone. His name doesn't carry the same weight for the general public as say Spielberg or Scorsese... Yet.

This tracking stuff always surprises me because I hang out (both in real life and online) with so many movie/comic book/videogame geeks that as far as I can tell Pacific Rim is on everyone's list of top movies to see this year. I would hope that the geek crowd would give Pacific Rim a decent opening, then word of mouth (assuming it's as good as we hope) gives it legs.

It doesn't surprise me that it isn't tracking well, it just looks like a hard sell, especially since it's not based on anything, since the average audience is dumber than a box of rocks. Do I want to see it? F- yeah! But does casual movie going family that made Transformers 2 one of the highest grossing movies that year, no... DeakenBlack was right, it should have had a December release...

Who is really surprised by this?

Sure the trailers look great, but these films are for a specific audience, clearly. It will suffer domestically, but I can almost guarantee in Asian markets, it will thrive.

Del Toro Needs To Decide!

I'm not surprised that Pacific Rim isn't tracking too well. People have been desensitized to the whole "giant robots" thing. The trailers look impressive, but in this day and age none of that is as breathtaking as Del Toro wants it to be. I'll be watching PR on its day of release, and I'll never ever watch Grown Ups 2, but even I'm not too excited about PR as a film. I just love summer movies and movies in general. I may get flamed for this, but Del Toro's biggest problem is not knowing what

He takes these popcorn-ish concepts and characters and then infuses them with some sort of pseudo-artsy vibe. In the end they end up looking well-filmed and cool, but also dry and void of any real sizzle. Moviebuffs and geeks will understand the appeal of his films, but the average moviegoer (who happen to be the majority) won't even think about giving it a second look.

I'm sure the ppl they asked were older ppl or people who refuse to believe that Adam sandler is washed up! Grown ups looks like shit! The 1st one looked like shit! Kevin James is one of the most UN funniest person in Hollywood! I'm stoked for pacific rim, but I can see y ppl aren't to excited for it. The trailers are all over the place, and the cgi is just to much! Everything looks like a video game. Once again ill be seeing PAC rim, but these CGI films r getting out of control

What Pacific Rim needed was a winter release. If it did it would have Avatar written all over it. Avatar was the only movie released that winter, except Sherlock Holmes, which made it money from leftover people who couldn't see Avatar. But not to many people knew about it and through word of mouth and lack of other movies, it's the highest grossing movie ever. The problem in summer is that you have too many choices. But movies, mostly, make their money the first week, then it tappers off

There are plenty of people in my office who still have no idea what Pacific Rim is. It was a ballsy move to make a kaiju movie with relatively unknown actors. But it's getting my $15 when it comes out.

if Pacific Rim is as good as we hope...

it'll pick up on word of mouth after release. i feel like that's what happened with the original Iron Man. leading up to it, the average movie goer was like "eh... i'm not too into comic book superheros". but after positive word of mouth, it became a "thing" for people who weren't interested to check out.

People are more interested in seeing Grown-Ups 2 than Pacific Rim?! Perhaps now might be a good time to invoke Prof. Farnsworth's quote about not wanting to live on this planet anymore. Sure, Pacific Rim may draw its inspiration from more niche popular media, but I think it's got mass appeal - it's a big, expensive summer blockbuster with action and special effects, and Guillermo del Toro is enough of a brand name director too. I really hope it performs well and makes the pundits eat their

really? i mean to people like us, Guillermo Del Toro is a brand name. but to the average movie goer? when i talk about him with my non-geek friends i always get... "oh yeah... i've heard of that name before. what did he do again? oh. Pacific Rim? whatever: i didn't like Transformers that much."

Hurmmm....

Though I can't see why audiences think grown ups 2 will be good, I can understand why they don't wanna see PR or don't think it'll be good. Honestly, if I was just judging by the trailer, I wouldn't think it'd be very good either. It's dark, hard to see, hard to see the monsters, and sounds kinda stupid. However,I know Del Toro, I have complete faith in him, the actors aren't unknowns to me. I'be known Charlie since freaks and geeks. I wanna see this movie. I think it'll be good, but idk if

Ultimately, if I was a studio exec, as much as I might have wanted to see this, I wouldn't have given it a 200 million budget in today's society.

Wrong Month

Original sci-fi needs a bankable star to put butts in the seats in July, it's just an over-crowded month with a lot of movies coming out. They should release this in august, cases in point: District 9 & Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Apes was #1 for 5 weeks or something ridiculous like that, you can't discount the fact that it was an awesome movie, but I doubt it would have done as well if it had any competition

It sucks that people would rather see Grown Ups 2 than Pacific Rim, but in all honesty it doesn't surprise me. Majority of people that come on to this site appreciate the talent and vision Del Toro brings to his films, but he's not quite a household name, speaking about the common household. So it would be hard to market a film to a wide audience beyond the Del Toro fanboys. And a movie as big as Pacific Rim, there should have been a much stronger marketing campaign started at least a month

I'm not trying to knock Pacific Rim, I'll definitely be going to see it as it looks amazing. But I can understand why people would rather take the weekend off from mega-blockbusters to take their kids to a family friendly movie vs. spending money to see a movie by a director they're not all that familiar with and doesn't have a highly bankable star. Disagree with me if you will, I'm just being realistic.

Good for legendary.

I hope Sony or Fox picks them up, their company would flounder at Universal to be honest especially if they want to get into TV. I think Sony and Fox would give them the freedom to do the things they want unlike what WB wanted them to do.

I hope Pacific Rim just fucking dominates at the Box Office. It looks like a HELL of a great time.

I honestly don't know what to say when it comes to audiences being more excited for more of Sandler's bullshit than something as epic and original as PACIFIC RIM. Guess time will tell.
