Warner Bros. in the early stages of developing a Matrix reboot

03.14.2017

The Matrix reboot

I hope you're ready to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, again, as THR reports that Warner Bros. are developing a reboot of THE MATRIX. Although the entire MATRIX trilogy was considered a success, the two sequels which followed didn't receive nearly the same amount of praise as the original, which doesn't exactly set the stage for a return to the world of the machines.

Warner Bros.' reboot is still in the very early stages, but Zak Penn (READY PLAYER ONE) is currently in talks to write a treatment for the reboot and sources say that there's interest in Michael B. Jordan (CREED) to star. However, the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed all three MATRIX movies, are not involved in the project, at least, not yet. I'd be shocked if the studio didn't at least seek out their blessing, but who knows whether this reboot will even reach fruition.

Less than a month ago Keanu Reeves was asked whether he would be up to returning as Neo in a fourth MATRIX film, and he didn't seem too put out by the idea, provided his conditions were met, namely, the Wachowskis would have to be involved.

They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t.

According to THR, there was talk of adapting the franchise for television recently, but that idea wound up being shot down. Warner Bros. is apparently looking closely at what Disney and Lucasfilm have done with the STAR WARS franchise, and they could use the reboot to explore "hidden corners" of THE MATRIX universe, such as a "young Morpheus movie." There's definitely plenty of stories which could be told in the world of THE MATRIX, but I can't say that I expected Warner Bros. to reboot the whole thing.

One way I could see this going is if they take the "legecy-quel" approach, picking up 10-15 years after the events of THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS with a new machine uprising against the now prosperous city of Zion. The stage would be set for a new group of characters to take charge, but would also allow for appearances from a few of the original characters as well as keep the franchise's mythology intact.

Take it away, folks. What are your thoughts on a reboot of THE MATRIX franchise?

Stories don't have beginnings, middles, and endings anymore. Now they have different beginnings, hidden middle chapters, or endings that go on forever. Hollywood desperately needs some new blood with fresh ideas. The tropes will always be recycled; there's no escaping that, but studio execs need to back off, take some risks, and let new ideas breathe a little. For better or worse, let artists do their work.

Trying to control my bias here...

NOOOOO!!!

You reboot a movie that either wasn't done well (ex. the 18 versions of the Fantastic Four...still never got it right or the Xmen after Xmen 3) or is so old that it seems dated now and needs an update (The Thing from the 80's or the live action Disney movies).

The first Matrix is neither. It's freaking brilliant and it's just as good now as it was then. IF they want a "new anomaly" to make HIS OWN DAMN STORY then fine cast MBJ for that NEW movie. Otherwise, have someone that

Otherwise, have someone that knows how to write (not the W sisters anymore) write a sequel that starts 15 years after Matrix 3 and then have Keanu Reeves star in the role he was borne to play. Jeez...this shit ain't rocket science.

Young Morpheus? Not really interested in how Morpheus became Morpheus. Hope they're not looking at MBJ as Neo. You don't need to race or gender flip everyone for a new movie. MAKE A NEW CHARACTER.

This strikes me as the kind of idea that's actually just a gauge. Like, this is never actually going to happen because the internet hates it so much it's going to go away. They were actually just testing. Guaranteed.

I like the Wachowski brothe...sisters. They come out with fun movies/tv series. The matrix trilogy, speed racer, cloud atlas and Sense8 and Ill pretend jupiter ascending isnt in that list because magic tatum's acting blehck. I dont see why they couldnt add something new to the franchise as long as they stay away from social media.

I think it's a horrible idea period to return to The Matrix in any form at this point. Love it or hate it, it's just not something that needs to be revisited at this point.

That said, if they are going through with this horrible idea, I hope they go the route of a sequel/reboot as the third film really left the franchise open to further movies with or without Neo, Morpheus, or Trinity.

If they're going the full on reboot method, queue the angry jerkoffs on the internet for recasting the

Believe this idea purely stems from, "Hey, Disney is rejuvenating the Star Wars saga, why not us?!". The problem is that this Matrix idea would crash and burn like the constant Terminator reboots. Is there some cool side stories, probably. Could they flush them out in a fun, interesting, new story, probably not.

No. Just no thank you please. Seriously, no thank you.

The first one at the time was great. It was original in story, special effects, made Keanu Reeves one of the worlds biggest stars. Now, it just seems either too soon, monochromatic clothes are a little 90's stupid, the sequels were awful and almost ruined the franchise. A lot of reasons to not do this. I think they should have only done just the one really.

Too soon.

The only POSSIBLE thing which could get me into this would be to pull a "Highlander" and tell the fans "yeah, we're gonna pretend Matrix 2 and 3 didn't actually happen, and we're gonna pick up at the end of Matrix 1 and actually get the [link] correct this time"

A reboot of The Matrix has serious potential and Warner Bros. are wise to explore the idea, but every single thing mentioned in that article leads me to believe this is going to be a disaster.

I suppose the best way to do this, if they are so set on it, would be to make I a so called reboot/sequel. Start at the end of the original and show the code from the one disseminated back into the matrix. Then show us the birth of the next "one", I would assume that would be Jordan. Then continue the story from there. However, I feel like the story would just be a repeat of the original as was indicated by the Oracle and the architect in the original. The battle reaches a peak but in the world

Just give us a sequel already

No one's clamoring for anything Matrix right now, but if you're gonna go down that route, the one thing you need is Keanu. He's the heart of the franchise, and you've caught him at the height of his career. And it seems like he needs the Wachowski...Sisters to be game, too.

So pitch the hell outta it. The Wachowski...Sisters can't be that busy. Unless they're working on a Cloud Atlas/Jupiter Ascending crossover.

I'm so game for the Cloud Atlas / Jupiter Ascending crossover. Channing Tatum's dog character and the Eddie Redmayne lizard people would learn the ultimate True-True from Tom Hanks.

Not down with this!

The Matrix was such a game changer when it came out in 1999. It had so many new ideas that Hollywood never had the balls give us at the time. There is absolutely nothing good they can accomplish with a reboot, especially when Keanu is still bonafied action star. For better or worse, remember Hollywood fight choreography before The Matrix.

In retrospect, I really don't think The Matrix films hold up very well at all, even the first one. The original is almost Sixth Sense level in how much of its appeal relies on the twist and, while the action is cool, the dialogue and characterization are almost B-level cheesy. That being said, if they make this film it will probably be the most hated reboot in history, simply on principle. The exploration of reality is one of my favorite niches in sci-fi but I'd rather see them explore similar

Let me guess.

Jordan plays Morpheous illegitimate son who's tough, but gets beat by agents on his first mission. Defeated, he seeks out Neo, now in a new form but still look like Keanu, to train him. But the agent that beat him is himself beaten by a more powerful agent. Neo then trains Jordan to become the "Black One". Im sold

I'm normally the kind of person who's fine with -- or at least indifferent about -- reboots/remakes, but this one...leave it alone. I think it came out during a very specific point in history where it really resonated with people, and if you remake it today it won't work half as well.

Reboot is such a chickenshit word

This is aimed at Hollywood, not journalists. It's a remake. Whoever came up with the word 'reboot' just wanted to sound like they knew what they were doing, when the truth is they had no original ideas. It's not a 'reboot' because you're not restarting it. You're remaking the picture, so give us a fucking break.

Awful idea. I loved the original trilogy and the story it told and the effect it had for future films in the genre, but it's time of relevancy has passed. Total cash grab especially if it doesn't involve Reeves, Fishburne, Wachowski sisters, etc.

Either do a fourth with Reeves or don't even bother at all; especially if they're considering having Jordan in the lead.

OMFG, are u serious...a reboot?!?!? with Michael B, Jordan?!?!? First off, the sequels were terribles, yes, its was like dumping water into an expensive scotch, but a total reboot with no wachowski involvement, therefore no Reeves involvement?? This is a new low, just build off of the first one, have no idea why you would start from scratch.

I know it's cool to hate on the sequels, but I'll admit to being a fan of the whole trilogy. Compared with most franchises being made these days with no end in site, it's actually nice to have a self contained trilogy of films to revisit.
Don't like the idea of a reboot. Maybe a spin-off could work, but I'd prefer them to just leave the series alone.

Agreed. The first movie had a self-consistent logical set of rules in how the world worked. Neo was ONLY "super" when inside the Matrix. The sequels broke those rules, giving him superhuman power OUTSIDE the Matrix. Made no sense whatsoever.
