Why I Love Movies - Chapter I

02.07.2014

Why do I love movies? Well, that is a loaded question. How much time do you have? I could go into a long-winded diatribe about the art of film-making or the magic of the movies, but all of that has been said countless times before. Not every movie is a masterpiece, but every film has touched me in one way or another. Every other week, we will look at a handful of reasons why movies are so damn great..

CHAPTER 1

I love movies...Because of every line in HAPPY GILMORE

Because of The Tinker's creepy ass speech in WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Because Wolfman's got nards.

Because of James Caan being seranaded by Will Ferrell in ELF

Because of Dick Van Dyke's lullaby in CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG.

Because Sloth loves Chunk.

Because of Bette Davis on the beach at the end of WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?

Because of the way Faye Dunaway looks in this scene from BONNIE & CLYDE.

Because of Keanu Reeves shooting at the sky in POINT BREAK

Because of the closing dance number in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Because of the way Indiana Jones says this line in TEMPLE OF DOOM.

Because of Gollum falling into Mount Doom in RETURN OF THE KING

Because of the makeover scene in DUMB AND DUMBER

Because of Al Pacino's speech in ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

Because of Thomas Jane's final moments in THE MIST

Because of Tom Cruise's performance in COLLATERAL

Because of Brandon Lee telling a joke in THE CROW

Because of Clive Owen's carrots in SHOOT 'EM UP

Because of the way Orson Welles filmed the crane shot in TOUCH OF EVIL

Because of Gene Wilder's tantrum in THE PRODUCERS

This will be an ongoing column so tune in every two weeks for more Why I Love Movies! In the meantime, we WANT TO HEAR YOUR OWN REASONS below!!

I love movies because.....

- The first rule of 'Fight Club' is.....
-Johnny Ringo is no daisy, he's no daisy at all!
-Of the Oscar worthy performance that is a dead man being made to look alive in Weekend at Bernies. (By the way, wheres the revival of this amazing series Hollywood! It's not like Andrew McCarthy has anything better to do....)
-No one really knows what happens in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and thats OK :)
-100 years later, the Little Tramp still makes me laugh
-Danny Boyle, Chris Nolan, Darren

-Danny Boyle, Chris Nolan, Darren Aronofsky, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and JJ Abrams. Nuff said.
-Even now when I get in my car and the windows are foggy, I wonder if a Velociraptor was just breathing on it.
-All it takes to creep out the viewer is a piano, and a long shot of someone being followed by a large man with a cheap white mask.
-And finally, I love movies because.......... of Phillip Seymour Hoffman. RIP.

this column is a GREAT idea!

Thanks for creating this column! I've been following Joblo since the first days it came out (but had only registered myself as a member a few years ago). I even considered applying when Joblo was looking for contributors oh, like, over a decade ago but I withdrew. Anyway, thanks for starting this column. It's a reminder that movie has become an integral part of our lives, for me especially.

I Love Movies because...

...of Nicolas Cage & John Travolta's explosive kismet duality in "Face/Off".
Because the opening 22 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" opened my eyes for the first time to the horrors & honor of sacrifice.
Because of the magic trick Heath Ledger's Joker performs in his full introduction in "The Dark Knight".
Because Bill Murray likes to show bitches how he does things downtown.
Because the Pen is Blue. The pen is blue! ...THE GOD. DAMN. PEN IS BLUUUUE!!!"

Because of the heartfelt conversations Dennis Quaid has w/ Jim Caviezel in "Frequency".
Because "...There is NO spoon"
Because of Tim Burton & Johnny Depp's gothic ability to separate a human's head from their body. ("Hollow" & "Todd")
Because sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.
Because of Tom Cruise continuing to perform like the damn Energizer Bunny in "Minority Report", "Mission: Impossible", "Collateral" & "The Firm". (Keep on runnin'!)
Because of Dirt. A Jar of Dirt. And it's going to help. ;)

Because you absolutely, positively DO. NOT. FUCK. w/ Liam Neeson's family!

And because whether you're an international terrorist, a rival mobster, a Sith Lord, a super-intelligent shark or a bunch of motherfucking snakes on a mother fucking plane...Sam Jackson will be more than happy to scream at you and then shoot you in the face!

I FUCKING LOVE MOVIES!!!

Love this.

We all love film it's true. Over time it's turned into a love of everything that encompasses it. We can deconstruct it, examine it, the art, and the process, and that's all in the love for it. But, it's nice to sit back and just remember all the badass, awesome moments that make us love it so much! Digging this new column a ton, great work!

I love this site and I've grown up with this site for the most part, I started posting on here when I was 13 and I''ll be 22 this year.

I love this site and I've grown up with this site for the most part, I started posting on here when I was 13 and I''ll be 22 this year.

It's nice to see it going strong! Hope to write and work for you guys someday when I get out of college.

Here are some moments I love off the top of my head.

I love film,
because of The courtroom scene at the end of The Boondock Saints,
because of Denzel Washington's Speech at the end of Training Day
because of the way Al Pacino chanted Attica in Dog Day Afternoon,
because of the way Macaulay Culkin gets lost in a world of animation in the library in The Pagemaster,
because of the way John Cusack stands in a phonebooth in the raid and tells his sister, "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen.' in Say Anything.

I love film for the way we see the ship full of dead sailors get discovered in Nosferartu.
I love it for the way the car chase never seems to end in The Blues Brothers.
I love it for the little video game character Alien Child being all vulgar and cute in Her.

I love film for Sergeant Barnes bunker speech in Platoon. "I am reality."
I love film for the way Animal Mother and Joker meet, and begin insult each other in Full Metal Jacket.
I love film for the way Lil Ze takes out his rival competition in City of God.
My 3 favorite films ever.

Good shit

Just wanted to say I'm glad everyone is enjoying this. Alex came up with a great idea and I love that it's a celebration of movies, rather than another cynical deconstruction of them that seems to be so popular today. We poke fun and bitch and moan sometimes, but ultimately we're all here because we love movies (probably a lot more than your casual viewer) and it's great to share that love somewhere. Thanks for the feedback, guys! More to come with this one!

Great article! This is my first Joblo post- been a daily visitor and comments lurker for year, and this one got me to finally sign up!

I love movies because of Boromir's dying "my brother, my captain my king" scene
because of the indian guy cutting of DeNiro's figurative and literal bonds in The Mission
because of Hiccup and Toothless' bond (and missing appendages!)
because "Snakes. I hate Snakes."
because of the "I will find you!" chase scene in Last of the Mohicans
and so so many more

All of Terminator 2. I love how Terminator is getting so much love in these comments.
Terminator 1 - skin melting away to reveal endoskeleton
The ending of The Usual Suspects
Total Recall "Get ready for a surprise"
Goldeneye intro
Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson in a car in Die Hard 3

Because of Nicole Kidman's last line in Eyes Wide Shut.
Because of what Kong did to those dinosaurs and how he threw Naomi Watts on his shoulder.
Because of Will Wheaton singing "I ran all the way home" in Stand By Me.
Because "Get busy living or get busy dying" in the Shawshank Redemption.
Because "It's a helluva thing, killing a man" in the Unforgiven.

Because Liam Neeson in Taken proved that in film, he can be totally badass.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for

Why I Love Movies...Because

Because You Don't Talk About Fight Club.
Because Bond, James Bond
Because the ending of E.T. made me cry.
Because the ending of Star Wars made me cheer.
Because American History X made me angry.
Because "All those moments will be lost, like tears in the rain"
Because actors do great unscripted scenes and great directors keep those scenes in their movies.

I love movies because I believe a man can fly. Because I was welcomed to Jurassic Park. Because I was taken to a galaxy far, far away. Because one girl ignited a spark and brought an oligarchy to its knees. Because the hills came alive with the sound of music. Because I needed a bigger boat. Because where we were going, we didn't need roads.

Why do I love movies.

Watching the cinema going public react to cool movie scenes:
cheering each time The Terminator reloaded the shotgun in T2
chanting Rocky Rocky, when he was fighting Drago
the roar of applause when Star Wars: Episode I scrolled up the screen (yeah yeah we didnít know then !)

The first time I saw ET, and begging my sister to bring me again.
Every time I see the gun barrel logo scroll across the screen
The first time seeing the Terminator
Seeing John Rambo

I love movies because of Arnold's T-800 said to John and Sarah Connor - "I'll be back" then walks out of the elevator facing the lobby full of SWAT guys to get the SWAT van and get John and Sarah out which starts the great chase of SWAT van and T-1000 in a helicopter in "T2". I also love movies because Peter Venkman said "Let's show this prehistoric bitc* how we do things downtown" in the showdown between Ghostbusters and Gozer in "Ghostbusters".
