Outside of PLEASANTVILLE, I'm not the biggest fan of Gary Ross' previous directorial efforts, but I've got to say this is a very solid first trailer for his latest movie, THE FREE STATE OF JONES. Inspired by the true story of Newton Knight, the upcoming film stars Matthew McConaughey as Knight, who led an armed rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War. In addition to directing, Ross also wrote the script for the historical action picture, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali

Last month McConaughey told EW that THE FREE STATE OF JONES is "a story about America and its relation with the individual and freedom. The period of Reconstruction following the Civil War is still under construction today.
