2 up for Oldboy

There’s been talk of an OLDBOY remake around Hollywood now for a while. I’m talking years. The last update we gave you came almost two years ago. That changes today with a huge update coming from Variety… and I’m talking huge.

But before I get into that, let me tell all you unfamiliar people out there exactly what OLDBOY is. OLDBOY is a critcally acclaimed Korean film from director Chan-wook Park. The simple synopsis reads: A man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. Massive violence ensues!

Now that we’re caught up… let’s get to this huge news I speak of. Variety reports that two huge names have dug up the shelved OLDBOY remake. Let’s not beat around the bush anymore, those two names are Steven Spielberg and Will Smith! Yes, Spielberg and Smith! It looks like DreamWorks is currently trying to score the rights to the film with Universal set to distribute.

It seems Spielberg and Smith have been looking to work together for a while, so they’re hoping OLDBOY is that opportunity. Smith would be playing the lead role that was played by Min-sik Choi in the original. Now I’ve never seen OLDBOY, though I really want too. So for you fans out there, is this intriguing or down right nauseating? Spielberg and Smith have really been tapping around the family-esque films for several years now. To step into something so violent and genre friendly seems like a weird turn for them… but how can you go wrong with one of the best directors in the business teamed with one of the best actors? You can’t. And whether you loath this news or welcome it.. you can’t deny Smith would probably nail this role!

So as of right now people involved are trying to get this one off the ground. As I mentioned, DreamWorks are working on scoring the rights while Spielberg is looking for someone to adapt the script. We’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on this one so keep it here for updates.
