Michael Mando, who starred as Mac Gargan for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, thinks it would be "facinating" if his character got his own Sony spin-off film.
"I definitely would," Mando told Screen Rant when asked if he has any interest in reprising the role. "I think that would be fascinating – a detective who goes rogue. Mac Gargan kind of goes a little bit insane, and there’s also this other story where he becomes Venom as well. I think it’s a very, very rich character; it’s a dark character. And he’s a cop at the end of the day; he’s a detective. I think that’d be something that I would definitely be something I’d like to watch."
Mando made his Sony Spider-Verse debut in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. The character was introduced as one of the gangsters that contributes to Vulture's (Michael Keaton) plot aboard the Staten Island Ferry. After a run-in with Spider-Man, Gargan is arrested and promply sent to prison. During the film's post-credits sequence, Gargan approaches Vulture and informs him that he's game for for squashing New York's Friendly Neighborhood Wall-Crawler.
In the comics, Gargan was a private investigator who was hired by J. Jonah Jameson to find out exactly how Peter Parker was able to get such detailed photos of Spider-Man in action. Only after his every attempt to be sleuth-like was easily avoided due to Parker's spider-sense, Jameson offered to pay $10,000 for Gargan to be the subject of an experiment that, if successful, would grant him abilities untold. Unfortunately, the experiment went awry, and Gargan lost his sanity in the process. As a byproduct of the failed procedure, Gargan became the stab-happy villain known as Scorpion.
Interestingly enough, Gargan once bonded with a Venom symbiote, a transformation that the villain rejected at first, but was then somehow convinced that it would give him an edge in defeating Spider-Man once and for all. If Mando's Gargan were to receive his own spin-off, could Sony find their way to the character once again by way of Tom Hardy's VENOM franchise? After all, the Spider-Man-centric antihero Morbius is already getting his own standalone film, and he hasn't even been properly introduced into the MCU thus far. With moves like that, it stands to reason that Scorpion could get his own film, provided that a solid story could be drafted in addition to Sony being willing to gamble on the character holding his own in cinemas.
Additionally, it's also possible that Mando's Gargan could return to the MCU if Sony ever moves ahead with their rumored Sinister Six initiative. A villain-oriented project such as this would allow the studio to welcome multiple baddies onto a single project, then they could access the future of each one based on fan reactions and so forth. For the time being, we'll just have to settle for MORBIUS, which stars Jared Leto and is now set to open in theaters in March of 2021. There's also Tom Hardy's Venom sequel, which just yesterday got an official title and release date of June 21, 2021.
