For many years, it seemed as though Supernatural would carry on until Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were old men, but all good hunts must come to an end and it was announced earlier this year that the upcoming fifteenth season would be its last. Padalecki and Jensen explained that the choice wasn't an easy one, but it was decided that they owed it to the fans not to have the show go out with a whimper. "Nobody wanted to see this show fizzle out. I think that it was everyone wanting to do the biggest service to the show that we could by going out strong. It just seemed like the writing was kind of on the wall as to when that was happening," Ackles said. "I think everybody kind of felt that it was coming soon. So it was just taking that leap of faith of going like, 'Well, guys, let’s get out the paint and paint that finish line, and hold our heads high, because what we’ve accomplished is unlike any other.'"
The CW has released a poster for the fifteenth and final of Supernatural which you can check out below.
In the season 14 finale, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) learned that Chuck aka God (Rob Benedict) has been orchestrating every dramatic twist and turn in their lives, and when they refused to continue following his plan, God opened the gates of hell, freeing just about every ghoul, ghost, zombie, and creature which Sam and Dean have defeated in the past fourteen years. Can't get much bigger than having God as the big bad in your final season.
"God’s been pulling the strings behind the scenes, and now Sam and Dean are really trying to break free for the first time in their lives," said co-showrunner Andrew Dabb while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, with Padalecki adding, "But we’re also struggling with: Is Chuck evil, or is he just trying to objectively write a story that’s exciting which controls our lives?" Given that the gates of hell has been opened, fans can expect a number of familiar faces in the final season, but Ackles explained that not everybody will be walking out.
There’s specific characters that we’ve dealt with in the past that will reprise their role. That doesn’t necessarily mean that everybody’s walking out though. Even though the doors are unlocked and people are walking out of hell, not everybody is quite as eager to jump ship. That begs a question of ‘why’ and it begs a question of ‘when will they?'
The fifteenth season of Supernatural will consist of 20 episodes and will debut on The CW on October 10, 2019.
