Bad hair & kitschy performances lead the trailer for The Hummingbird Project

Well, here's a quirky little drama to fill your Friday: THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT from writer/director Kim Nguyen starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgard and Salma Hayek. Following a pair of gents (Eisenberg and Skarsgard) who want to game the stock market by way of a fiber optic cable that gives them 16 milliseconds of advance trade knowledge, the two embark on their scheme as a rival trader who seeks to undermine their efforts and reap her own rewards. I feel like there's a whole sub-genre of these "game-the-system" heist style movies and nothing pleases audiences more than watching every day people get rich and (rarely) getting away with it. This is a fun trailer with some goofy antics, wild hairstyles and kitschy dialogue that looks more self aware than anything (I hope so, at least).

Here's the synopsis:

In this modern epic, Kim Nguyen exposes the ruthless edge of our increasingly digital world. Cousins from New York, Vincent (Jesse Eisenberg) and Anton (Alexander Skarsgård) are players in the high-stakes game of High-Frequency Trading, where winning is measured in milliseconds. Their dream? To build a straight fiber-optic cable line between Kansas and New Jersey, making them millions. But nothing is straightforward for this flawed pair. Anton is the brains, Vincent is the hustler, and together they push each other and everyone around them to the breaking point with their quixotic adventure. Constantly breathing down their necks is their old boss Eva Torres (Salma Hayek), a powerful, intoxicating and manipulative trader who will stop at nothing to come between them and beat them at their own game.

Somehow, I don't think this will hurt Skarsgard's sex appeal and it's probably a bit freeing to play against type in a role like this. Hayek is always a blast, coupled with her immortal beauty and Eisenberg's neurotic tendencies typically makes for some good laughs. This may be billed as a drama, but I'd be watching strictly to see those hairstyles and overacting. Find out for yourself when it opens on March 15, 2019.
