It's being reported that Netflix has acquired the rights to David Gran's THE CHAMELEON, based on a feature the writer wrote in 2008 for The New Yorker. What's more is that couples Christopher and Heather McQuarrie (MISSON: IMPOSSIBLE MI6) and Rachel and Terence Winter (THE WOLF OF WALLSTREET) will activate their Wonder Twin powers to collaborate on the making of the project. Christopher McQuarrie is fixin' to direct while Terrance Winter would co-write the script with Carl Capotorto. Both Heather McQuarrie and Rachel Winter will work in conjunction with their other halves to produce.
In what we know about it so far, THE CHAMELEON is the chilling true story of Frédéric Bourdin, a young French con man who was a serial impersonator of missing teenagers. For a time during the mid-1990s, Bourdin lived with a family in San Antonio, Texas under the guise of being their long-presumed missing brother. The film will be presented as a psychological thriller akin to such films as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS or MAKING A MURDERER.
Boy, people sure are strange, aren't they? I can't even imagine a world where I would impersonate a series of runaway teens. All I can think of with this scenario is the families involved, and how devastated they must have been to learn of Bourdin's shenanigans. I know that it takes all kinds to make the world go round, but you've seriously got to have a screw loose if bringing more heartache to grieving families is your jam.
