First look at Pennywise’s “friendly” guise from the new IT reboot

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm actually excited about the IT reboot. Don't get me wrong, Tim Curry fucking killed it as Pennywise in the original adaptation of Stephen King's novel, but after revisiting it recently, the rest doesn't quite hold up. Not a terrible movie by any stretch (and again, Curry is great, as always), but it's definitely not something that couldn't be improved upon.

Which brings us to the new reboot coming out next year, directed by Andrés Muschietti (MAMA) and starring Bill Skarsgård as the new Pennywise. Now, the new design of Pennywise has been…divided to say the least. I really like it, but I can understand others being more hesitant or dismissive. One of the chief complaints is that it looked too automatically scary, and that one of the reasons Pennywise chooses his guise is to trick and lure children.

Well, filming has wrapped, and one of the producers of the film sent an Instagram photo of a Pennywise figurine. And it seems to be our first look at the "friendly" guise the Pennywise clown takes:

Look, if you have coulrophobia, nothing's going to change your mind on the guy. But as you can see here, it definitely shows that the make-up can allow Pennywise to look goofy if need be, which would help with him luring and killing children (so…yay?). The question is, do kids still find clowns funny, period?

Like I said, I'm on board either way. But what about you guys? And what Stephen King movie would you most like to see remade (personally, a more competent MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE could be sweet)?

IT will be released to theaters September 8th, 2017.
