Deadline is reporting that MGM and Atlas Entertainment has acquired the film rights to the Top Cow comic book Rising Stars.
The 24-issue limited comic book series, which ran from 1999 to 2005, follows "a special group of people all linked to one extraordinary event, and how they change the world we know into something we only imagined. It offers a new world of superheroes, as 113 children who were in utero when a meteor hit their Illinois hometown were left with special powers. Some of them are being murdered, and when that happens, their powers switch to the remaining 'specials,' some of whom want nothing to do with this superhero business."
In addition to penning the script, creator J. Michael Straczynski will also produce the movie alongside Atlas through his Studio JMS shingle. Straczynski isn't a stranger to big or small screen projects though. He co-created the Netflix series Sense8, as well as Babylon 5 and the spinoff Crusade, while his feature film writing credits include WORLD WAR Z, THOR and CHANGELING.
