Today Marvel made official what many of us have suspected for some time, that Ryan Coogler (CREED) will be taking on directing duties for BLACK PANTHER. After making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Black Panther/T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) will finally take center stage in his own film and knowing that the director of CREED will be guiding Marvel's next big hero is enough to get me very excited about the upcoming flick.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed his own excitment in Marvel's official press-release:
We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family, the talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.
The only unfortunate side-effect of this news is that Coogler's involvement with Marvel and BLACK PANTHER will likely keep the director from returning to helm the follow-up to CREED, which has been scooping up the awards lately, including a supporting actor win for Sylvester Stallone at last night's Golden Globes.
BLACK PANTHER is set for a February 16, 2018 release.
