Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw is getting an English-language remake

Shield of Straw Banner

Deadline is reporting that Chris and Paul Weitz are developing an English-language remake of Takashi Miike's SHIELD OF STRAW (WARA NO TATE) through their Depth of Field banner, with All Nippon Entertainment Works and Nippon Television. A director hasn't been announced yet, but the screenplay is being written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, the husband-and-wife team who penned the scripts for OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN and LONDON HAS FALLEN.

The original movie "centers on a team of five police officers charged with protecting an accused killer who has been marked for death by the billionaire grandfather of his latest victim," and starred Takao Osawa (THE TERMINAL TRUST, MIDNIGHT EAGLE), Nanako Matsushima (RINGU, Kaseifu no Mita) and Tatsuya Fujiwara (BATTLE ROYALE, DEATH NOTE).

Chris Weitz on SHIELD OF STRAW:

What struck us most about the original film was how at the core of this action thriller, there was an intense morality tale. It’s one that analyzed the gray area between the law and justice, as well as what rights a presumed murderer should truly have. There are no easy answers. We want audiences to leave the theatre discussing what they would have done in a similar situation.

Takashi Miike's Japanese police thriller was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, however it received mixed reviews upon its release. I've heard good things about the film from a few of my friends though, and I have been meaning to check it out. Are you interested in seeing an English remake of SHIELD OF STRAW?
