Alfonso Cuaron, per usual, is being linked with tons of projects. Part of the benefit of directing a lauded movie like GRAVITY means that every major film that needs a high caliber director will be linked to you. First it was the HARRY POTTER spin-off FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM and now it is a prequel to THE SHINING.

Consider this nothing more than a rumor for now, but Schmoes Know claims to have verified through multiple sources that Alfonso Cuaron has been offered the directing job on THE OVERLOOK HOTEL. The long gestating prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel THE SHINING, THE OVERLOOK HOTEL. Last year, reports had former WALKING DEAD showrunner Glen Mazzara writing the screenplay. Not much further has been learned about the project.

Cuaron definitely would bring something special to a project with such giant footsteps to fill. Kubrick’s THE SHINING remains a hugely influential movie both visually and technically, but Cuaron has proven to be adept in both of those arenas with his films. Cuaron is also not shy about tackling a sequel in a series he did not originate. If I had to choose between THE OVERLOOK HOTEL and FANTASTIC BEASTS, I would rather see what he could do with the world of THE SHINING.
