When the mysterious teaser for INTERSTELLAR debuted over the weekend, many were intrigued by the narration discussing the history of human flight. To say the least, the trailer was cryptic and provided no new information as to what the actual plot of the movie is about. In typical Christopher Nolan fashion, we have been given parts of the puzzle and left to contemplate what it all means.
Not one to give away anything abut his first collaboration with Nolan, star Matthew McConaughey shared a little insight into what INTERSTELLAR represents and if the trailer was intentionally this mysterious.
“He sure as [heck] knows what he wants,” McConaughey told The Times. “There’s scope, major scope, which means a lot of things have to be coordinated. But at the same time, when you’re shooting it moves incredibly quickly.”
The screenplay for INTERSTELLAR is a combination of an idea that was previously going to be directed by Steven Spielberg that Nolan meshed with a script already written by his brother Jonathan Nolan. That screenplay involved space travel and alternate dimensions. It remains to be seen how much of that draft is in what Nolan has put to screen, but I would say epic would be an understatement.
But, the story of human perseverance and defying the odds at any cost also holds a very personal place for Nolan, according to McConaughey. Christopher Nolan‘s entire career has been about directing unconventional films and shirking advancing technologies like 3D or digital cameras. There are a lot of Nolan haters out there, but you have to admire the man’s dedication to his craft.
