Marvel may be building Phase Two and Three to lead into an Infinity Gauntlet storyline in The Avengers 3

Between the Easter egg of the Infinity Gauntlet in Odin’s trophy room in THOR and the post-credit sequence of Thanos at the end of THE AVENGERS, it seems pretty obvious that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed towards a classic storyline, one way or another. In fact, it may be here as soon as THE AVENGERS 3. With Phase Two building up to THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Thanos is not going to be the primary focus for our Earthbound superheroes, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a threat behind the scenes.

Kevin Feige, who has been quoted twice today already, was asked if we can expect to see Thanos obtain the Infinity Gauntlet is THE AVENGERS 3:

“Well, I don’t know that I would spell it out that clearly, necessarily, but certainly fans of the comics could surmise that all of this is leading somewhere. That Joss’ decision to have Thanos turn around and smile for the audience at the end of THE AVENGERS, our reveal, was always the plan.”

So, if that plan may be coming, when will the build-up begin?

“…And where it goes from there, we’ll see… But yes, the MacGuffin of ‘Guardians’ certainly plays into MacGuffins of the past.”

We were already aware that Thanos would be appearing in different capacities in both THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON as well as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, so this may be the beginning of the largest scale tie-in since the first AVENGERS movie. I don’t think we will be getting much of Ultron in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER or THOR: THE DARK WORLD, but GUARDIANS looks to already be paving the way for the mega-crossover event.

Stay tuned for more. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hits theaters on August 1, 2014 and THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits May 1, 2015.
