If your anxiousness to see Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY is as much as mine, listening to the full score for the movie is the next best thing to seeing the film. Some people aren’t fond of movie scores, but if they are done right, you can hear the accents to the film along the way and get the emotional feel for the plot without pesky things like dialogue or visual cues. A great score can tell almost the complete story without giving everything away.

Steven Price’s score for GRAVITY is not one with pronounced themes like those from Hans Zimmer or John Williams. Price’s musical work on films like ATTACK THE BLOCK and THE WORLD END have provided electronic and pulsating scores. His music for GRAVITY is ethereal and haunts the vacuum of space. On it’s own, the music is a beautiful listen that I can only imagine will enhance Alfonso Cuaron’s film without being intrusive.

Here is what Price told Wired about his approach to scoring GRAVITY:

“Alfonso was always very determined that the soundtrack be immersive. As you sit in the theatre, the score literally moves around you and seeks to complement the weightless movement of the outer space visuals. We want you to feel within the experience. In order to achieve this, we recorded separately a wide range of elements, including glass harmonicas, voices, and string and brass sections of various sizes so as to allow a lot of freedom in both movement and also post-recording processing. Elements come and go, pulsate and transform, and follow the movements onscreen in a way that will hopefully add to the total cinematic experience of Gravity.”

GRAVITY starring George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, and Ed Harris opens in theaters on October 4th.
