With filming not set to begin in London until June, it should come as no surprise that the crew working on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is already working their tails off to get the movie ready to shoot. With a possible came by Iron Man to help establish the connections within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn and his staff do not have a lot of time to get their ducks in a row.

Executive producer Victoria Alonso shed some light on where things stand in the development of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, completely CGI characters, in an interview over at Cinema Blend:

“We’re going to do a combination. You can’t do any motion capture with a raccoon – they won’t let you put the suit on [laughs]. But we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can’t do mocap on a tree, per se, but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He’s very clear on where he wants to take the characters.”

With those rumors of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler being sought for voice roles in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, could there be motion capture work in it for them as well? I would think that would be very likely. With the success of Andy Serkis in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and the LORD OF THE RINGS films, using the actor to completely inhabit the role will make the film seem a little more realistic. With the story and characters being so completely insane, it needs to be grounded in some sort of realism for it to work and just animating the character will not achieve that.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will hit theaters on August 1, 2014.
