Looks like now that Marvel has announced James Gunn is directing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, we get to know officially that Thanos will be the villain, or at least one of them.

Cosmic Book News learned from Jim Starlin, who created Thanos in the Marvel comic book world, that Thanos would be the main villain in THE AVENGERS 2 and would also appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. They also mentioned that his appearance in GUARDIANS may be alongside two other potential villains: Adam Warlock and The Magus. Now, not to make things too complicated but if Adam Warlock and The Magus appear, who knows how many potential superhero movies could be spun-off from that.

In either case, I would bank that Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY would be mainly to set him up for THE AVENGERS 2, seeing as the release dates line up properly. IRON MAN 3 opens May 3rd, 2013, THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8, 2013, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens April 4, 2014, and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is scheduled to open on August 1, 2014. THE AVENGERS 2 would wrap up Phase Two on May 1, 2015.
