You can expect The Avengers 2 to wrap up Marvel’s Phase Two in May of 2015

The Avengers roughed up 656 banner

Joss Whedon was just signed to write and direct THE AVENGERS 2, a move that firmly cements him at the robustly beating heart of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. This will also include contributing to the crafting of all other Marvel films leading up to THE AVENGERS 2 as well as the recently announced TV collaboration with ABC set in the Avengers universe (IRON MAN 3 probably excluded as it is already deep in production).

And now, according to an official statement from Marvel provided to ScreenRant, we have a more precise timeline for Joss Whedon’s current contract commitment which allows for a relatively easy deduction as to just when AVENGERS 2 is going to drop.

The statement reads: “Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015.”  Considering the very successful release date used by THE AVENGERS of May 4th, combined with general common sense about the release window for big deal summer blockbusters, it seems pretty safe to say that you’ll be able to see AVENGERS 2 come to a theater near you on some as-yet unspecified date in May of 2015.   And no, pre-order tickets aren’t on sale yet.  You can always check back tomorrow though.

Here’s a recap of specific dates we do know:

IRON MAN 3: May 3rd, 2013
THOR: THE DARK WORLD: November 8th, 2013
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER: April 4th, 2014
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: August 1st, 2014

And maybe ANT MAN sometime in 2014 as well, depending on how production on Edgar Wright’s THE WORLD’S END goes this fall.
