To be fair, making the sequel to a successful Star Trek film is not quite “where no man has gone before.” But that didn’t stop J.J. Abrams and Co. from embarking yesterday upon what is sure to be a grueling production schedule as they soar towards a release date of May 17th, 2013.
While a year and four months of production time may seem like a lot at first glance, keep in mind that they’ve got to 1) shoot the thing, 2) put in all of the special effects, 3) put J.J.’s beloved lens flares into all of the space scenes, and then 4) market the movie. We’ve seen what a curtailed production schedule can do to movies that bank quite a bit on their CGI effects (see X-MEN: FIRST CLASS for a first class education in some dodgy CGI), so hopefully J.J. and his team can find the time to do all that needs to be done.
Like post-convert the movie to 3D. Oh yeah. *Sigh* Because that’s worked out SO well so often…
The whole cast that made up the crew of the Enterprise is back for the sequel, along with new additions Peter Weller, Alice Eve, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the movie’s main villain. The script is again by Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci (along with some help from frequent J.J. collaborator Damon Lindelof), and Michael Giacchino returns once more to write the score.
