We’ve been talking about this Liberace biopic for years now which stars Michael Douglas as the flamboyant star and Matt Damon as his lover, but finally it seems like it might come together. Just not where you were expecting.
Such a film seems like a sure thing for theaters, especially with Damon attached, but HBO Films has actually acquired BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, and the movie will run on their channel.
But this is hardly like the movie is on Lifetime. HBO Films has had some incredibly great movies in the past few years, and immediately Al Pacino’s YOU DON’T KNOW JACK (which he would have gotten an Oscar nom for if it was in theaters) and Kevin Spacey’s RECOUNT come to mind.
Steven Soderbergh, the film’s director, praises the HBO partnership: “From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it.”
