Because of The Hangover’s success, an Entourage movie is for sure happening

Have you been watching the newest season of Entourage? I haven’t, but I hear it’s not exactly blowing people away, and the rest of us are wondering how is it the show is still on the air after all this time.

But even if its fanbase has dwindled somewhat and it’s not the pop culture icon it once was in its early seasons, that hasn’t thrown any water on the rumored movie which is getting close to becoming a reality after this final season.

Creator Mark Wahlberg points to the recent success of R-rated comedies as to why an Entourage movie would work:

“I’ve been telling Doug, The Hangover is to me very much like Entourage, and look at all the recent success of R-rated movies.”

The Doug he mentions is creator/EP Doug Ellin who has this to say about the idea:

“We’re going to do a movie,” he said. “We’re going to do it, the questing is when and how quickly. Hopefully we’ll come down with an idea and make it happen.”

I don’t think this is the worst idea in the world, as if done properly, could be pretty fun. The problem is are enough people going to be caught up on the show to go see the film, which would presumably build off of whatever happens in the last season?

This is as opposed to recent R-rated hits like THE HANGOVER, BRIDESMAIDS and HORRIBLE BOSSES where everyone went in with a blank slate. But with Entourage there is going to be a pretty significant margin of people who say “Oh I’ve never seen that show so I can’t watch the movie.” Even people like me probably wouldn’t want to see it until we catch up with the last few seasons. I don’t think this is going to go as well as they imagine.
