If you’ve never heard of Suzanne Collins’ young adult book series THE HUNGER GAMES, you probably will soon. Seems that Lionsgate thinks they’ve got the next TWILIGHT SAGA on their hands, and is in search of an appropriate director to make it live.
The studio is currently eyeballing Andrew Adamson (NARNIA: THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE), Susanna White (NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS, “Generation Kill”) and commercial director Rupert Sanders for the grim teen-friendly action-drama.
Lionsgate was previously looking at slightly bigger names like Sam Mendes, Gary Ross and TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE guy David Slade.
The demographic-crossing bestsellers are set in a not-too-distant future, where “the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.”
So a slice of THE RUNNING MAN with scoop of THE BLOOD OF HEROES and a dash of BATTLE ROYALE, undoubtedly populated by dreamy teens?
