Would you pay to see a movie about Rush Limbaugh?
I can’t say I’m a fan of the guy, but if all the facts were laid out on the table and the right actor was chosen, I’d give it a whirl.
Well, apparently someone thinks that he’s movie material. Writer/producer James Sclafani is that someone. Sciafani has written a screenplay for a potential film on Limbaugh based on an unauthorized biography by AP media relations head, Paul Colford. The biography is titled, The Rush Limbaugh Story: Talent on Loan from God. Sciafani is ready to shop the script around to obtain some financial backing as well as a director.
The script, Sciafani says, is a “close cousin” of Oliver Stone’s W. Which he says means that he is trying to get beneath surface politics and controversies in order to find the ambition and demons in charge of Limbaugh’s success. The film covers everything from “4-F draft status during Vietnam (unearthed in Colford’s book) to a get-tough stance against drug abusers that was contradicted by the revelation that he himself was addicted to prescription painkillers and got them illegally.”
Sciafani gives his perception on the film, “This is Citizen Kane meets Private Parts, where you have a man who always had trouble relating to people in the outside world, but does it effortlessly in the booth.” He also adds that Limbaugh was the “proverbial fat kid” always ignored in school, “There’s this anecdote about a game of spin the bottle in high school. The bottle pointed at him, and the pretty girl who was supposed to kiss him ran away, and that stayed with him. When he came up in radio, he was culturally opposed to everything happening in the 60s and 70s, and all this left him with something to prove. He is an underdog, and became an extremely determined person with something to prove.”
Producer Renee Tab will join Sciafani for the film. The two are also working on SHOW OF THE BULL with TAKEN director Pierre Morel. Sciafani most recently sold his script for COUNTER KID to Bill Murray’s Devoted Pictures.
Limbaugh has yet to be involved. Sciafani said he will approach Limbaugh, “when the time is right”.
