Duvall for Quixote?

JoBloJoBlo

For years, we’ve heard rumblings that eternally unfortunate filmmaker Terry Gilliam had every intention of resurrecting his epic failure/labor of love THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE.

In fact, just a couple of months ago he claimed that he’d found a suitable replacement for Jean Rochefort, his original whimsical windmill-tilter before the production imploded (a tragedy documented in LOST IN LA MANCHA).

Is that new Quixote screen legend Robert Duvall? That’s what the actor himself tells Collider while out promoting CRAZY HEART: “I may work with Terry Gilliam next – if they get the money – to play Don Quixote de la Mancha.”

Note the financing caveat — even Duvall must know of Gilliam’s infamous jinx.

The original movie was loosely based on the classic Cervantes tale of a quirky old Spaniard. Gilliam’s first attempt at the film was to star Depp as an obnoxious advertising exec who gets hurled back through time where he meets Quixote, and ends up becoming his sidekick Sancho Panza for various adventures. The production was plagued by injuries, harsh weather, an uncooperative crew and a vengeful God who apparently really hates Gilliam’s filmography.
