It’s probably safe to say that none of us would be surprised if it turns out that the SAW franchise isn’t really dead. Aside from the fact that the last entry was a disappointing – not to mention open-ended – “final chapter” to the series, there’s no denying that even as the series’ longevity at the box office dwindled with each subsequent entry, they were still quite profitable for the studio, Lionsgate. (SAW VI, the least of the money-makers, still walked away with $61 million worldwide on a budget of only $11 million – and that’s before DVD/Blu-ray sales.)
And that’s the exact reason that James Wan and Leigh Whannell don’t think we’ve seen the last of the SAW films. “You can always count on capitalism, guys,” Wan told IGN in a video interview (which you can see below). “The fact that it’s such a huge, well-known franchise means it’s going to come back at some point.”
While there are no plans (that we’re aware of) to continue SAW in the near future, it would make the prospect more interesting if Wan and Whannell returned, wouldn’t you agree? So how would that happen? “I would come back if we were allowed to do something different and really cool,” Wan said, sounding open to the concept.
Whannell agreed, saying, “We would want to do something that’s a bit of a different take.”
Indeed, something different is absolutely what’s in order for this series if it wants to grab our attention (and dough) again. Check out the full interview below to hear more…
