What an interesting project DJINN is: a film directed by Tobe Hooper but set in the United Arab Emirates, funded by Imagenation, the film production arm of massive Abu Dhabi Media. We first received solid details about the film back in February, and it would appear as though a lot has been accomplished since then…

An article in The National (owned by, yes, Abu Dhabi Media) indicates that filming is currently in full swing in Dubai, with all of the exterior filming actually completed. In addition, IMDB has listed the main cast (though don’t expect many of the names to ring a bell): Khalid Laith, Razane Jammal, Saoud Al Kaabi and UK-born Paul Luebke. David Tully wrote the screenplay.

The plot, as The National has it, goes like this: The film is set in 2015 and follows the story of Khaled and Salama, a couple who return home from America to discover their apartment in a luxury high-rise, built on the site of the deserted fishing village, is also home to malevolent beings.

Producer Daniela Tully had this to say about the film’s gore quotient: “There is not that much blood. It is more of a supernatural horror rather than a thriller or slasher horror. It is a tale told with a lot of respect for the Emirati traditions and it will stay with you for a long time.”

Shooting inside a Dubai studio will now commence and the production is expected to be completed by the end of April. Evidently there are already plans in place to make a prequel and a sequel.
