One project I was really looking forward to was Gore Verbinski’s adaptation of the popular X-Box 360 game BIOSHOCK. Alas the filmmaker couldn’t find a studio willing to put up the cash needed for the hard R rated BIOSHOCK film so the thing was eventually scrapped.
The guys over at ComingSoon.net recently had a chance to sit down with Mr. Verbinski to talk about his upcoming animated flick RANGO and they happened to ask a bit about the dead and buried BIOSHOCK project. Check out what Verbinski had to say:
“I couldn’t really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating. Alternately, I wasn’t really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you’re still shivering and going, “Jesus Christ!”… It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the pricetag is high. We just didn’t have any takers on an R-rated movie with that pricetag.”
The director also would’ve liked to do the film in 3D. Imagine what that shite would’ve been like??
“[Bioshock] would be a great movie to do in 3D. I’d like to go into that world wearing a pair of glasses. I think in general, gaming is perfect for 3D. Anything where you’re the protagonist. The kid in ‘The Shining’ on the big wheel, going around corridors. That’s what 3D is perfect for. To make people feel on-edge.”
I know there’s no real point to this story considering the project is shelved but I found it pretty interesting so I figured there might be some of you out there that would find it interesting as well. Hopefully things eventually work out for BIOSHOCK but I’m not counting on it.
